Sea lions shot dead on Columbia River as salmon battle rages

For years, the sea lions lounging at the Bonneville Dam have had easy pickings from salmon waiting to go up fish ladders to upriver spawning grounds.

what's more important, salmon or sea lions?

we eat salmon, can we eat sea lions?

the sea lions don't go away, they are feeding out of the fish ladders... or we've created a feeding area for them rather. it will be interesting to see what the courts do with this situation (the sea lions in general, not the shooting specifically).

if the public is not allowed to bother the sea lions and seals. why are they picked up and treated when they are hurt or sick? why arn't they left to die or get well on their own??

Because if everybody got to pet a seal or sea lion, crap like this would happen on a daily basis. Marine Mammal Act prohibits anyone from interacting with a marine mammal within 100 yards. It is only in emergency situations where qualified personnel can assist a marine mammal that is injured or in life-threatening danger. Come closer than 100 yards to say a seal or sea lion sun-bathing on the beach or trapped in a "humane" cage and rangers, wardens, police officers, or anyone with that authority can legally arrest you. Another thing, the general public is not allowed to come up and bother you, so when you're hurt or sick why don't we just leave you to die or get well on your own? Heartless...the real issue is the dam and all the problems associated with it (i.e. fish ladders lead to large amounts of fish in one area, which lead to sea lions grabbing an easy meal, which lead to trappings by wildlife agencies, which lead to **** off fisherman or ignorant people shooting innocent, helpless animals). Remove the dam and this problem dissipates.

Stop the violent deaths of our aquatic friends!

These people need to be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the laws our mammal bretheran are just feeding in their natural enviornment and to be shot at by over zealous humans is sickening.

Permanently close the fishing for salmon and the rape of other sea life and let the karma flow with good vibes all around.

Stop the FISHING!

I guess it's because we are choosing sides. You can always count on well-meaning humans to favor the specie with the cutest babies.(Except human babies. Them, we ignore on a regular basis).
See, Seal Babies are SO CUTE.
Iranian Babies are not so cute.
Ask your darling Democratic candidate Hillarity. She's prepared to kill them all right now.
She is a laugh-a-minute.
Can you say "Obliterate Iran?"

Since when did war with IRAN become Hillarys idea?(no, Im not a supporter of hers)
If you feel she would CONTINUE the failed Bush/Cheney policies, say so, but dont make it sound like something as stupid as another war
is HER idea! Only Bush could come up with that!

Obviously everyones out to bash her, fine, But Christ on a ****!
At least wait until shes nominated!- and QUIT ignoring the fact the we STILL have the 'war criminals' controlling our country for many many more months!!!!
I see the truth of it

Um, apparently you are the putz, Observer. The question, rephrased, is who will benefit by killing sea lions. Rey answered, correctly, the salmon. I don't agree with Rey, but you seem to have a comprehension problem, PUTZ.

Sea lions belong on the Columbia river, and have always been here except briefly when they were nearly hunted to death by stupid people. Now that they are returning, leave them alone.

Now the govt is claiming they mysteriously died of "heat stroke." Give me a break. No way. It wasn't even 60 degrees.
