I'm a 56-year-old woman. I go to the Plaza alone all the time and don't feel threatened or intimidated. I get really, really annoyed at the able-bodied young men hitting me up for money, but not scared.
I too once got the " **** " treatment for keeping my head down and plowing ahead rather than "feeding the bears." I just turned around, looked at him, and asked, "How would your mother feel about all this? She must be about my age. Does she know how you're living?" He was literally speechless.
Well that makes everything OK now doesn't it?

You know what would be really cool? Dave Merserve standing at the ATM with a stack of twenty's, handing them out to all the lowlife, smelly scum that panhandle there...and of course, that money is his own. Never Happen. Like all good progs, he only wants to give away other people's money.

Dave Merserve, an egaerious example of a waste of good protoplasm, taking up atmosphere which might otherwise be ulitized by a viable human being.

Hey, Dave, better get down to the City Hall, I am sure that Shane needs a diaper change!

Coffeeshops Coming
Willits, CA YOu like so many put out OLD news to attempt to justify your agenda. Holland/Amsterdam officials have gotten fed up up with the "open weed program".
They have been very busy for quite some time shutting down their drug problems.

I have to agree with Gerry on that one. I live in Eureka and have lots of poop in my yard (because if you don't have a seven foot adobe wall with glass shards, that means you want dog poop) I don't even have a dog. But lots of people that don't want poop in their yards find their way to mine. I know it's OH SO HARD to pick up poop. And you might mess up your outfit, so I will continue to happily step in it and move it out of the way so that I can garden in my own yard with no dogs but lots of poop. I've never understood this. It's your dog and you don't want to deal with it's poop, why should I? That's O.K. just continue to justify your boorish behavior and blame it on someone else who looks more culpable, like a lowlife.
I have a nice yard in Eureka that dogs avoid. Want to know a secret? Dogs have very sensitive noses. If they smell something unpleasant in your yard, they won't want to poop there. I recommend spreading ground black pepper on your lawn or yard. Another effective strategy is to spray small amounts of ammonia in the middle of the sidewalk surrounding your yard. Ammonia isn't good for your plants.

P.S. Once the dogs smell the bad stuff in your yard, they never seem to come back.

I lived on the streets when I first hitched out to California. Camped out of town whenever possible. It's really beautiful here. Been around Arcata since '86. It was a great town. Now I own a house because I've worked hard to be able to stay. I am reluctant to go anywhere near the Plaza- it's a pit. It became this way when that idiot Ornelas encouraged these spongers to hang out. Meserve continued the stupid encouragement of these retards. These aren't kind hippie-types or artists. It is a menacing environment downtown-you should go live there Meserve. You pretend you're mellow but you encourage a situation that can only result in violence because you are stupid.

I go to the plaza often , I have been asked for handouts but never hassled to the point of calling the police or called names or verbally abused . Just say No as nancy told us thirty years ago . These kids are part of our culture here and sure they are kinda an eyesore , but this is AMERICA and we all have a right to be here. LAND OF THE FREE still means something does it not?

What business is considering a move to our town? Or anywhere in our state? I'm considering a move out of our town, if the trucks don't start rolling again soon.

I usually get a fresh apple fritter from Don's donuts for $1.30 and sometimes a cappuccino from a plaza bistro and sip it on the plaza.

And I do carry a few dollars doe the special occasion where someone is begging yet entertaining me or that I see is likely permanently disabled.
