Actually, the new hospital will likely be federally funded bringing more jobs to El Paso for it's construction. It should have no impact at all on property taxes.
As for the BRAC issue if Ft Bliss had been the target of reduction or closure rather than the massive increase we would have the same people complaining about that. Given a choice I'd rather have 50,000 new military here paying taxes and not using many services than 50,000 illegals using services and not paying many taxes.
Roger That! But I must say, our Mayor and City Reps just need "any" excuse to raise or property taxes.

I respectfully disagree that the overall impact will be negative. Of course there will be negative incidents, but we will have negative incidents with any new large influx of people. Having served in the Army (although it was some years ago and I was never stationed at Bliss) I was stationed at both FORSCOM and TRADOC bases. The main differences that I noticed was that although there were less restrictions on FORSCOM soldiers as far as off base activities they are also better behaved overall. The FORSCOM soldiers tend to cause less trouble and integrate better with the community because they are stationed there longer...generally 3 years or so. TRADOC soldiers (trainees) don't spend as much time offpost so don't feel part of the community as much. I hope this helps a little.
I appreciate your constructive insight and sincerely hope you are correct. Someday I would like nothing more to say than you were right.

I LOVE TAX increases !!
that way we can treat more Narcos from Juarez Mexico (my home) and deliver more illegal alien babies to put on Texas WELFARE !!!
it is good for my job security as president of tech medical school !!
sorry de la Rosa, soldiers & families will not be going to your unemployed, welfare hospital. We'll go to Wm.Beaumont and if not there, the one of the PRIVATE Hospitals in ElPaso, or one of the new hospitals on the East side of town!
better think of a new excuse to raise taxes, rather than ARMY expansion of Ft.Bliss.

Chief, just looking at the upgrading of quarters at Fort Bliss makes me think the post will be self-contained for the most part. I suspect a new PX and Commissary which can better handle the population and there you go. The troops will visit businesses on Montana and various other parts of town. A family may go to the mall, Target, or Walmart once in a while. But...the restaurants in town already have turn-away traffic. I won't wait longer than 20 minutes to be seated. The medical facilities will be welcome especially if they benefit troops and their families. I still fail to see the economic boom that is expected. Can you sharpen my vision...or lack of?
The boom will most likely com in the long term, while Fort Bliss is prepairing for the arival of the soldiers, El Paso isn't doing much. There are several posts of the impact of so many soldiers and family members so quickly, and for the most part I share their sentament, there will be a great deal of growing pains here in El Paso. If you remember what things were like when the Cav was here, things will most likely be similar, Dyer street was not a place to be after dark, prostitution, bars strip clubs and other similar businesses.

I'll be glad to see some real, factual input from people in the know (not Mark B) as to the economic growth for El Paso. As an economy grows, as more talent moves into the area, as more customer service oriented employees come to work every day, the business environment could change significantly. Imagine. People happy to help you spend your money instead of growling at you all the time.
Unfortunately, except for a short paragraph, this article relates to the same old stuff....medical and social services.
You just keep dishing it out but you cannot accept the fact that this city is already gearing up, has been for sometime, and El paso is postioned for good growth for years to come.

The home valuations speak for themselves. The economy is stable here and growing. The information I have posted here at Topx IS FACTUAL. You seem to be wanting to read something to your liking...that is not reality.

Actually quite a bit is being done in the NE. New homes are going up all over, especially along Railroad past the loop and roads are being widened and repaved. There will be growing pains as you said, but overall I think the influx will be great for El Paso and especially the NE. The NE part of town took a huge hit when the 3rd ACR left and has never really fully recovered. I look forward to the troops coming and we should make them feel welcome when we see them when we meet them. Make them feel part of the community and many of the "incidents" may be avoided.

Mark B, you and I agree on this issue the difference is that I can also point out when the city is screwing up. You seem to be a cheerleader for everything done around here by local governments and refuse to admit that some things just aren't right. You might get a better response if you were able to see past the "party line" and step up when the city/county/etc try to stick it to the citizens of El Paso. Just some constructive advice.

El paso has done a lot Chief....the Desal Plant-$80 million, the Spur..$300 million+, new subdivision ordinaces for the upcoming master planned communities, over $400 million in Quality of Life Bonds passed plus a $230 million EPISD bond plus the Chambers and many organizations are helping in the effort to organize and help in acomadating the growth. and these are just a few of the things that have been done...want more?

I try to accentuate the positive. I know local government has had its issues and there are problems but the last five years has seen tremendous advancement. We should focus on that and try to correct the problems.

Mark, you seem to have some "in" with city planners. Can you find out if any plans are in place to widen to 4 lanes the stretch of Railroad north of Loop 375 past Deer? They have built a new school at that intersection, a new construction company nearby, and MANY new homes along that stretch, but for some reason never widened the road and now the traffic has gotten terrible. One person turning left at Deer or Quail blocks traffic for everyone else on the road.

Exactly. For the most part, it will be the typical (maybe a little better) GI town...not the transformed sophisticated metropolis some have been trying to convince us of. Many of us have been discussing the prospects and how they could possibly differ very much from what we've all experienced in our assignments all over the country.

Yes they are doing things, however, the desal plant was planned before BRAC, the school districts only plan 5 years out when building a new school, hense all the portibles, the builders did the ordinances to favor themselves, and they don't build many houses without someone to move right in after its built. 50-60 thousand increase in population over a 2 or 3 year period is not healthy groth for any community, there are going to be huge growing pains any way you slice it

Why have you singled me out as a person "dishing it out?" It's clear I ask questions and exchange experiences. What is the matter with YOU? I don't dish anything out. I have utter disregard for you and much respect for many others. Don't address me.

I think that the biggest culture shock for this town is that the majority of these soldier and families don't speak spanish, spouses are going to be looking for work and find that they are being turned down because they don't speak a foreign language.

I'm hoping the additional influx to the Northeast helps jump start new business here. Northpark/Northgate could especially use some "revitalization", but there is also plenty of room for new business along Transmountain and farther out on Dyer and McCombs. Being able to go to a Sams or Cosco w/o driving across town would be nice.
You're absolutely right about that area. We go all the way from the eastside to Lowe's in the northeast and a couple of restaurants there. All because of customer service. I would love to see some businesses move in...especially a Sam's or Costco. I would also love to see old apartment dwellings torn down and a few other buildings.
