Without Beaumont, the demise of Central El Paso continues. |

I'll be glad to see some real, factual input from people in the know (not Mark B) as to the economic growth for El Paso. As an economy grows, as more talent moves into the area, as more customer service oriented employees come to work every day, the business environment could change significantly. Imagine. People happy to help you spend your money instead of growling at you all the time.
Unfortunately, except for a short paragraph, this article relates to the same old stuff....medical and social services. |

I LOVE TAX increases !! that way we can treat more Narcos from Juarez Mexico (my home) and deliver more illegal alien babies to put on Texas WELFARE !!! it is good for my job security as president of tech medical school !! |

Why fix something that works for The Pass Of The North???

As a professional I find your compunction absurd. By the way your comment is most distastefull... |

My concern is that El Paso is not considering that the billions being spent on positive progression for our community will lead to more criminal activity in our city. If we are setting ourselves up to be the biggest army base in the USA, we must be prepared to deal with the negative aspects of this growth too! Where will the federal funds come from to deal with that aspect of this incredible expansion? Just wondering!

Unfortunedly, the good comes with the bad. Things, however, will have to change in terms of treating outsiders knowing full well that the system is not going to be compensated. So if YOU were the decision maker, how would you remedy the enormous problem? Prepayments? Medical insurance requirements? Medical refusals? Confront the problem like the private medical industry? It is ludicrous that the tax-payer should wind up holding the bag. |

I agree with you. |

Actually, the new hospital will likely be federally funded bringing more jobs to El Paso for it's construction. It should have no impact at all on property taxes.
As for the BRAC issue if Ft Bliss had been the target of reduction or closure rather than the massive increase we would have the same people complaining about that. Given a choice I'd rather have 50,000 new military here paying taxes and not using many services than 50,000 illegals using services and not paying many taxes. |

will this cause any growth to the city of chaparral. Is there any plans for housing in Chaparral

I have been talking about the efect of the BRAC for a long time. This town is not prepared for the influx or do they have any idea of what that many people that quickly will do to the city.
|
That's a thought... |

Yeah, you get half of the 50,000 illegals to go with the rest you are aiding, abetting, and harboring. |

Chief, just looking at the upgrading of quarters at Fort Bliss makes me think the post will be self-contained for the most part. I suspect a new PX and Commissary which can better handle the population and there you go. The troops will visit businesses on Montana and various other parts of town. A family may go to the mall, Target, or Walmart once in a while. But...the restaurants in town already have turn-away traffic. I won't wait longer than 20 minutes to be seated. The medical facilities will be welcome especially if they benefit troops and their families. I still fail to see the economic boom that is expected. Can you sharpen my vision...or lack of? |

I'm hoping the additional influx to the Northeast helps jump start new business here. Northpark/Northgate could especially use some "revitalization", but there is also plenty of room for new business along Transmountain and farther out on Dyer and McCombs. Being able to go to a Sams or Cosco w/o driving across town would be nice. |

I have stated it before, and I'll state it again. Even with the extensive infrastructure planning and development taking place today, the influx of military and dependents will have a tremendous negative effect on El Paso's overall quality of life.
The post's transition from a TRADOC to FORSCOM means that we will have battle-hardened warriors in our midst instead of student soldiers. While warriors of course are critical for our defense, they tend to experience greater challenges in blending with a civilian population. As a result, El Paso's low crime rate will become a faint memory along with a relatively low number of traffic fatalities. While money-grubbing business people see dollar signs with the growth of Fort Bliss, the typical resident will begin looking for a new home far away from what will become a sprawling, grim, and grimey city. |

I respectfully disagree that the overall impact will be negative. Of course there will be negative incidents, but we will have negative incidents with any new large influx of people. Having served in the Army (although it was some years ago and I was never stationed at Bliss) I was stationed at both FORSCOM and TRADOC bases. The main differences that I noticed was that although there were less restrictions on FORSCOM soldiers as far as off base activities they are also better behaved overall. The FORSCOM soldiers tend to cause less trouble and integrate better with the community because they are stationed there longer...generally 3 years or so. TRADOC soldiers (trainees) don't spend as much time offpost so don't feel part of the community as much. I hope this helps a little. |
