What is going on with American society? When did we just let go? America is the most obese nation on earth (Mexico #2) and El Paso is among the fattest cities in the US. I went to the street festival this week and my God it looked like the “Gordita Festival” two out three women there where fat and don’t care they show their “lonjas” with pride. We as tax payers need to be concerned because of the high cost of healthcare due to obesity. Sure in a free society we are free to be as big as we want, but how are we educating our children? School lunch menus consist of saturated fat foods, nothing healthy anymore. McDonalds advertises in favor of Olympics and other sports, yet they are in part responsible for our nation’s obesity problem and why many are not healthy enough to be athletes. We need our politicians to put forward plans to have our society slim down. I just don’t know what to expect, while our local government officials seem to be at a healthy weight. What can I say about the ones at the state and federal levels? Silvestre Reyes is not at a healthy weight at all in fact he is the epitome of being obese, yet his pails in comparison to our state officials. I saw Chente Quintanilla at the street festival and he is so fat he looks like the mascot for Carnitas Queretaro. Norman Chavez and her auntarage you can actually feel the ground shake when they walk. They look like a bunch of angry female sumo wrestlers that will eat you if you get in there way. What about new comer Marisa Marquez? I lovely young educated and very promising women who just beat the longest standing Chicano elected official in our country, well every time I see her she is fatter and fatter around the 250 pound mark and gaining. I give her until the end of her first term to get to 300+ and she hasn’t even had kids yet.

This may seem like nonsense but how can we expect control and action from those that govern us if they can’t take control and action of their own lives? How can we expect them to implement and educate school children on healthy lifestyle while they are so incredibly unhealthy themselves? Meanwhile as a society we are eating our self’s to death and proud of it, just ask the mini-skirt, tight pant, incredibly short, short wearing ladies out in the street and their bold fat tattoo sporting novios.

wow! that is one stinging commentary. it's sad about el paso, but true. el pasoans need to start taking more pride in their appearence. it takes a leader to get the populace involved in a health lifestyle. more bike paths are needed. more parks. more outside activities. fewer all you can eat joints! it's really distressing to see "large" parents with overweight kids. those poor kids dont have a chance.

I just wanted to correct a mistake in the OP. You stated, "We as tax payers need to be concerned because of the high cost of healthcare due to obesity. ".

There was actually a study done not too long ago in Holland that in the short term, yes, obese people do cost more, but over their whole lifetime, they end up costing less than healthy people because they die younger. So strictly from an economic issue, it's actually better to have a slew of fat people who eat themselves into an early grave than a bunch of healthy people who live nice, long lives.

I do agree that El Paso is a "fat" city. I moved here less than a year ago and was absolutely shocked how few health food options there are here. What it boils down to is parents having to be more responsible in teaching their children responsible eating habits. I made my kids' baby food instead of giving them jarred, processed, junk. We do not eat fast food. We are vegetarian. We do not eat food with high fructose corn syrup. We try to, within a budget, do as much organic as possible. There are only a few select restaurants here that we will eat. My kids, now that they are older, get meals from home versus the junk that the schools serve up. It may seem kind of restrictive to a lot of people, but I think it's very important to teach my kids how to live, not how to kill themselves slowly through learning poor eating habits. As a result, I have two endocrine disorders that by all means say I should be overweight, but because I do take nutrition so seriously, I'm 105 pounds!

Well said Doroteo, i finally agree with you on this subject. Marissa is a real fatass slob. i saw her at city hall a while back and she was taking the elevator!!!I wanted to comment but instead felt very svelte compared to her. she was in a skirt and dammit her hips are huge. she is the new spokeswoman for the GORDITA festival. when i left city hall, she was around the north corner SMOKING a cigarette with some other slob chick. i have never seen chente so i cant vouch for how much of a slob he is. its very sad that we cannot be more proactive/preventive about the state of the health of out city. i went to the street fest and many fatass hispanic women with no scruples in regards to their appearance. i saw one portly slob with her belly hanging out, c-section scars and the word GUERERRO tattooed in a semicirle over her belly button, with two little porkers in tow. i agree with your scathing expression but i know you are concerned as well as i. thanks for your input. Its not wake up el paso its run el paso.

Paul Moreno is a pig in a chair. His ugly fat sister who looks just like him except with longer hair has not missed a meal in her life.

Marquez is pleasantly plump.

Yes Paul Moreno is fat and so is the West Side guy Haggerty. Like I said all El Paso State and federal Politicos are fat the ones coming in and the ones going out, most county and city officials are fat too.

Do you idiots really think I’m the guy in the Superman costume? LOL

Why does Doroteo always pick on Marisa Marquez? Marisa did not win a beauty contest she won a seat in the state legislature. I agree El Paso is very over weight and maybe our leaders should take action and set a healthy example, but please stop the personal attacks.

LOL, I didn’t mean to attack Marquez on this trend, I was just trying to point out the weight problem in El Paso and the possible reason elected officials fail to take action. However I can assure you that anyone that has the opportunity to meet Marquez, and know how she really is will sympathize with why I and so many people hate her. She is an awful person even worse than Norma Chavez who has been referred to as the “DEVIL” by those who know here.

Marquez is not a bad person she means well, she recently became a local celebrity so she is overwhelmed she will eventually get used to it and calm down. Norma in the other hand has got to GO!
