This process of deliberate and painful overfeeding continues for up to a month, by which time the birds’ livers have swelled up to twelve times their healthy size.

The process of forced feeding is so traumatic, and the confinement and conditions on foie gras farms so debilitating, that the pre-slaughter mortality rate for foie gras production is up to 20 times the average rate on other duck factory farms.†

During the course of our investigation, GourmetCruelty.com discovered corpses of ducks who had literally burst open through overfeeding. Investigators also found many birds who had choked to death on their own vomit. Necropsies performed by veterinarians on dead ducks taken from Hudson Valley Foie Gras determined that some of the birds had died of aspiration pneumonia—a painful and often fatal condition caused when, during the process of forced-feeding, food is pushed into the lungs of the birds.

Really? Take a look at Cook County tax revenues since they added a dollar to their cigarette taxes. The bottom dropped out from them while surrounding counties and Indiana revenues skyrocketed.

I wonder if any of the people who keep reassuring me the goose feels no pain (based on the lack of nerves in the throat) have ever spent time with someone with an enlarged liver? I have - the liver enlarges, presses on other organs, the abdominal distention and pain this causes is real. I don't know about the anatomy of a goose - but I am going to guess they do have nerve receptors somewhere in their abdomonal cavity?

That said - the cruelty to animals being served to us is widespread. Does not make them right. All of the aforementioned practices should be banned by the Department of Agriculture. Free range for everyone!

I guess Joe knows how it feels now to have decisions made without your constuients approval. The real reason people are so disgusted with Joe "no moore" is because his ward needs him to pay a lot more attention to basic needs than the alusive foie gras. 98% of those living in the 49th Ward didn't know what foie gras was until his rediculious stance on the matter. It was Joe's way of finally meeting his idol Loretta Swit. Now his claim to fame.
Why doesn't he quit while he is ahead. This WILL be his last term as Alderperson of the 49th Ward!
