'They're standing on the corner and they can't speak English.
I can't even talk the way these people talk: Why you ain't, Where you is, What he drive, Where he stay, Where he work, Who you be... And I blamed the kid until I heard the mother talk. And then I heard the father talk. Everybody knows it's important to speak English except these knuckleheads. You can't be a doctor with that kind of crap coming out of your mouth. In fact you will never get any kind of job making a decent living. People marched and were hit in the face with rocks to get an Education, and now we've got these knuckleheads walking around. The lower economic people are not holding up their end in this deal. These people are not parenting. They are buying things for kids. $500 sneakers for what? And they won't spend $200 for Hooked on Phonics. I am talking about these people who cry when their son is standing there in an orange suit. Where were you when he was 2? Where were you when he was 12? Where were you when he was 18 and how come you didn't know that he had a pistol? And where is the father? Or who is his father? People putting their clothes on backward: Isn't that a sign of something gone wrong? People with their hats on backward, pants down around the crack, isn't that a sign of something? Isn't it a sign of something when she has her dress all the way up and got all type of needles [piercing] going through her body? What part of Africa did this come from?? We are not Africans. Those people are not Africans; they don't know a thing about Africa ... I say this all of the time. It would be like white people saying they are European-American. That is totally stupid. I was born here, and so were my parents and grand parents and, very likely my great grandparents. I don't have any connection to Africa, no more than white Americans have to Germany, Scotland, England, Ireland, or the Netherlands. The same applies to 99 percent of all the black Americans as regards to Africa. So stop, already!!! With names like Shaniqua, Taliqua and Mohammed and all of that crap .. and all of them are in jail. Brown or black versus the Board of Education is no longer the white person's problem. We have got to take the neighborhood back. People used to be ashamed. Today a woman has eight children with eight different 'husbands'-- or men or whatever you call them now. We have millionaire football players who cannot read. We have million-dollar basketball players who can't write two paragraphs. We, as black folks have to do a better job. Someone working at Wal-Mart with seven kids, you are hurting us. We have to start holding each other to a higher standard. We cannot blame the white people any longer.' Dr. William Henry 'Bill' Cosby, Jr., Ed.D. WELL SAID, BILL It's NOT about color... It's about behavior!!! |

Well said Mr. Cosby. You're a man wity principles and guts.
The same descriptions could describe white and Hispanic kids in the southwest. It's tough to understand how these kids graduate from high school with the "He don't," "They was," "She cain't," "He don't got no excuse for that," "We ain't doin nothin," speech. It doesn't fly in places where good jobs are available. It doesn't fly, when people are judged by their vocabulary among other considerations. Standards acceptable in Carlsbad, like teeth rotting out of people's mouth, are not accepted by big industries like Microsoft as a quality in a good applicant. Way too much competition. These threads are rife with examples of horrendous grammar and poster's inability to create a decent, gramatically-correct sentence. Whites and Hispaics have been ducking under the radar as well. Cosby's right. Parents set examples for their kids who simply absorb high or low standards for grades, parenting, personal hygiene, aspirations, social interaction--everything a person needs to learn in order to have a successful life. Teachers should not be blamed because kids are brats, keep getting into trouble, wear inappropriate clothing, break schools rules, misbehave in class, don't do their homework, lie when caught breaking rules, get expelled........and everything else parents should have prepared children to know are bad. And, another subject, why do parents buy packaged food for their kids when we know it has mostly empty calories, alot of fat and no nutrition. Whole foods are cheaper. I have no idea why there so many complaints about fat kids. Look at their parents. Look at their grocery carts. Brain power is directly associated with proper nutrition. Fat parents produce fat kids by giving them the example of sloth. Parents who love their kids, take care of them. |

Everyone speaks with a regional dialect, and thats normal. The problem is some of these people are speaking from a ethinic/community dialect... and it shows that they are becoming inslar and isolated...
|
||||
|
There's a wide chasm between regional dialect and just plain bad grammar. What I hear, and I believe teachers would agree, is pitiful grammar.
If parents want their kids to succeed in the real world, or even here, with the few well-paying jobs available, they need to buckle down and teach their kids proper grammar, which includes proper sentence construction and no double-negatives. If parents don'know good grammar, they should learn. It's the least they can do for their kids to prepare them for adulthood. |

English is the only sure route to succuss in the USA. If you do not speack/write english well, you will always be a provider of common labor.(Ditch digger)
In all fairness, we need ditch diggers. Ditch diggers earn $15/hour in Carlsbad, however if you want to be a doctor or nurse, learn English well. |

Carlsbad high school and the JT hi FAILED to meet the requirments of no child left behind for the 3rd year running.
I hope the new superintendient can tie a knot in the tail of the union, fire the poor teachers, and make progress toward quality education. Enough excuses; Get R done. |

Cant keep control of the class then they cant teach...
|

Tenure is the word: T E N U R E. After a teacher has attained tenure, it's pretty tough to fire them. But, it is interesting to me that no one even responded to my suggestion about parental volunteerism in the classrooms (or where-ever else they're needed). The school district my kids were in until they were 12 and 14, had a huge volunteer program. The teachers felt so much gratitude for the volunteer's help, and the volunteers felt grateful that, being there, they could feel the pulse of the school. Teachers have an uphill battle trying to undo bad manners, foul language, bad grammar, poor personal hygeine, bad wardrobe choices, and rebellious attitudes, which are all examples of parental neglect. Teachers shouldn't be required to undo these bad habits. Parents should send kids to school prepared to learn what the teacher is there to teach them. Teachers shouldn't have to worry about all of this other garbage, so it takes up too much time and interferes with the children's education. This is strictly the parent's responsibility. Too many fail, choosing to defend their rebellious kid who is disrupting the classroom. Read the statistics on school uniforms and see how the problems above would be eliminated, allowing the teacher to teach the little angels, enabling the kid to have a realistic professional goal when they grow up. Plus, they're cheaper, not requiring fad items of the day. The number one priority parents should have for their kid's future is an excellent education. It, again, is their responsibility to facilitate this education by preparing the kid correctly. Work hand-in-hand with teachers to achieve this. They will welcome this. Teachers: don't be intimidated about the presence of a voluneer in your classroom. They can be that extra pair of hands and the eyes in back of your head, and your greatest support. Parents and Teachers: Work Together For The Kids. Put down walls to one another so your mutual goals for excellent educations can be achieved. |

NM school districts are paid monies by the state of NM based on attendance, therefore if a student is expelled, the district looses money.
Because of this 'system' the district is loath to dicipline students (they may get mad and not return to school) or expel a student. therfore the learning enviornment is poor for all and in fact the entire system is failing thank you union! thank you tenure! thank you gov richardson. |

Read the birth section of the local paper and you will soon learn that 50% or more of these students were born out of wedlock (bastard)
They are no parents to volunteer. This is Carlswelfarebad! Welcome. |

What an excellent subject for the CA!!!!!!!!!! |
||||
Thank you, Mr. Cosby. People (all races) here should take a good look at their participation in the decline of this nation. |
||||
A catch-22 situation if I've ever seen one. Does anyone have any ideas to solve this craziness. |
||||
Another. |

There are certainly many excellent messages here. |
