A 67-year-old woman has been identified by the San Mateo County coroner's office as the trespasser who was fatally struck by a Caltrain vehicle in Burlingame Friday evening.

Lauren Redmon was struck at about 6 p.m. after attempting to cross the tracks north of a pedestrian crossing between the Burlingame and Broadway stations, both in Burlingame, according to Caltrain spokeswoman Christine Dunn.

The northbound No. 373 Baby Bullet train, which had last stopped in Redwood City, wasn't scheduled to stop again until Millbrae and was speeding through Burlingame when the pedestrian was hit.

Within a few minutes, a conductor announced a trespasser had been killed and the train would be held until further notice, prompting a flurry of cell phone calls among riders telling friends and family they would be running late.

Shortly afterward, the train's engineer, who appeared agitated, was overheard saying he had sounded the horn to alert the pedestrian but to no avail.

By 6:45 p.m., riders were being let off the train through the rear car. They trudged through the gravel along the tracks toward California Drive to find another way home.

Meanwhile, at the Burlingame station a short section of Burlingame Avenue was cordoned off between California Drive and Carolan Avenue as the death was being investigated by the San Mateo County Sheriff's Office, which has jurisdiction over the Caltrain tracks.

Sheriff's Sgt. Roger Copeland said a witness had told investigators the pedestrian had walked around a closed yellow pedestrian gate at the northern end of the Burlingame station before she attempted to cross to the southbound platform.

Parents and teenagers on their way to a football game at Burlingame High School just a block away from the station were allowed to duck underneath the yellow police tape and cross. Many asked what had happened and gasped when they saw the body covered by a yellow tarp.

This is ridiculous. When are people going to learn that they shouldn't try to beat the train!! My heart goes out to her friends and family, but please, the gates, flashing lights and horns are there for a reason! What is it going to save you, two minutes?? Not only is is tramatizing to the engineer and passengers on the train and witnesses, but it also messes up everyone's commute. It may sound insensitive, but people need to learn to pay attention!

two days ago i was at Oak Grove and California when the bells rung, gates started going down, etc. the car in front of me went around the gates, swerving through over the tracks, and missed sure death by a split second. after the train passed, i met up with him at the next stop sign, so beating the train really didn't save him time. he was not deaf, or dumb or blind. just stupid.
