What follows below is Alan Chartock's July message to WAMC's dues-paying members.
But the obvious question it raises is:
If money at WAMC Northeast Public Radio is so scarce, why isn't Mr. Chartock himself taking a paycut as an example to employees as well as to membership?
At last check, the 'public' radio station boss was pulling down close to $165,000 annually.
And that doesn't include his many perquisites from the station (free car, free in town apartment) and expense account -- which he claims is zero -- yeah right!

So here's the little professor's latest call to action published in WAMC's July, 2008 Program Guide:

"Lightning Strikes – in more ways than one"
by Alan S. Chartock
WAMC President and C.E.O.
Okay, I have never hidden the truth from you.
Things are extraordinarily tough. We have been hit
by so many lightning strikes, we’ve had to repair our ancient roofs and buildings, and the cost of
electricity to run the station has climbed so high that the wolf is absolutely at the door. This is deadly serious stuff. So many of you have done so much to help us that I hate to ask for more, but even with last month’s wonderful fund drive, it just doesn’t look good.
We are economizing in every way we know how.
Jobs have been collapsed, everyone is being asked to do more, and pay raises are out of the question this year. On the other hand, more people are pitching in than ever before, the fund drives are the best in America, we keep winning prizes for excellence, and we know how much this radio station means to you. Many of you have asked us to bring you a better signal where you live and we have tried our best to do that.
From that incredible day in 1980 when we had the
heroic Save Our Station emergency fund drive,
there has been an unwritten, unsigned agreement
among all of us that we would pull together to
make a great radio station. You would not be
reading this now if you didn’t know that. We
could do less -- not have a Roundtable, not serve
our regional community the way we do and give
up the thousands of hours of news programming
that we do now and just bring on NPR
programming. You know that we’d rather take
poison. If you listen to the fund drives you’ve
heard what people are saying about this radio
station. You know what WAMC means to so
many people who depend on getting the weather
forecasts and who know that no one else brings
you the depth of coverage we do, from Supreme
Court hearings to those warnings from Scott Ritter
about the way things are.

(Continued from above)
So now it is up to all of us to make it right. We
must redouble our efforts. Everyone has to do
their part or we simply will not make it. If you
know of a family foundation or a person who
listens who might be helpful, I would love to
know about it and to make the time to meet with
them. Just think about what this region would be
like without WAMC. Everyone here will keep
working at full pitch. If you have not made a
pledge yet, we need you now and ask you to be as
generous as you possibly can be. If you could
write an additional check, that would be great. If
you know of a place where we should be going to
find some extra money, you have only to e-mail
me or to call me (alan@wamc.org) 800-323-9262
ext.150 or Selma Kaplan (selma@wamc.org) ext.
155 or David Galletly (david@wamc.org) ext.
151.
In the meantime, please understand that this isn’t
easy. If you depend on the radio station; in the car; when you wake up or you go to sleep or get up in the middle of the night and need a friend, I know that you will do the right thing. We desperately need your help and we need it now. Please take out your check books and your credit cards and help us to preserve this treasure of a radio station.
As I said above, we can’t do it without you. From
the bottom of my heart, we all thank you.– A.C.

Is he, SERIOUS? I think we know who the wolf is,'at the door'. After reading his need for help, I just have this urge, to take a shower, this is unbelievable. It sounds like Dave Ploufe from the Obama camp, asking for your last nickel, these bloodsuckers, have fundraising down to a science, there like professional writers from the screen actors guild.

Speaking of wolves O think we should wake up the wolfe at WPYX and have him do a fund raiser for poor Alan and company. I think if Mr. Limbaugh and Mr. Heller do their part they can save the voice of reason in the capitol area. I think if WAMC offerred a Larry the Cable guy and John Mulrooney special they could save Alan's expense account. How about toupee's across the Hudson too.
They could also have the lovely Rosell skydice topless.

I would not give chartock a nickle. He is ridiculously biased and more than that he is a terrible interviewer with an annoying personality.

GM keep up the crusade. It is amusing to see your consistent ramblings about Chartock. You rant and you rave, and yet WAMC continues to successfully solicit donations which fund their continued operation. It is a public radio station, largely funded by donation. If you don't like the message, then don't listen and don't donate.

I listen to the good programming from npr but refuse to subsidize chartock or listen to his schtick. I'll donate if he resigns.

Thirty years a lady who idolized Elvis and Willie Nelson had their faces tattooed on her inner thighs. Thirty years later, you can guess what they look like. Still, she is so proud of them she'll show them to anybody who has the stomach to look. One night she was out, and forgot to wear her underwear. She struck up a conversation with this drunk guy and asked if he could identify to the two tattoos. So the drunk looks at one, then the other, turning his head back and forth for a few minutes. Finally he comes up for air and says: I don't know about the guy on the right or the left, but I'm pretty sure the one in the middle is Alan Chartock.

Right there with you. I donated the first year I moved here. I will NOT call 1-800-323-NINE262.

Lides, do you actually donate to WAMC?
And if so, how much is your contribution annually?
Do you think Mr. Chartock should take a paycut? Please keep in mind that he's pleading poverty for the umpteenth time and making it plain to everyone at the station that they must forego any thought of a pay increase.(Whereas Chartock's salary from WAMC went up $50,000 in one year alone not too long ago.)

Yes.
As with so many of your questions, none of your business.
No.

Do you give money to WAMC, or are you just whining for no particular reason? Chartock spends a great deal of time on the air and dealing with the operations of the stations, much more than a regular 9 to 5 job. Such efforts deserve appropriate renumeration. If his staff or listeners did not believe that his salary were appropriate, they could stop supporting him with their donations, or quit. And yet although that seems to be your pipe dream, it has not come to fruition.

I don't care what Richard Grasso or Alan Chartock make, but if there are tax dollars in there, and in Chartock's case there is, then he's making too much.

He's a sanctimonious egomaniac who does pandering interviews with politicians and reporters in the name of public service. If thats what you like then support wamc.

He spends ALL of his time spewing forth BIASED triads. It's supposed to be National Public Radio, not Neo-socialist Propaganda Ranting.

Chartock reminds me of the rear of a cow but the cow smells better and passes less gas.
