Let them build within their own boundaries. I have a feeling that most of the people who contend such gated communities have no desire to ever drive through them if the gates were removed.

This is mainly people just fighting a battle to keep busy and get their name in the paper.

If the streets are privately built and maintained, the public has absolutely no business there at all.

If you own property, either individually or as a group (subdivision), you should be allowed to limit public access.

That salient point is always lost in discussions about gated communities.

That salient "point" becomes lost in any discussion about private land ownership.

Remember the crazy guy who said we didnt actually own our property, all the people do and he has the right to do whatever and wherever he chooses? He was a nut case.

Its not only developments with this problem. Private land owners have problems with keeping people out.

If its not yours, leave it the heck alone.

Yeah, I remember him. Strange fellow. I think he actually believed what he wrote. Obviously didn't own anything!

City council should not put their pants down in front of the big names in development . The idea that gated are divisive to our community is showing that The council CAN sometimes vote for ideas and moral instead of as usual economical reasons .

that man was partially correct...
you really do not OWN it, our government does, your only paying taxes and a lease on it...
same way with your car or other property... as long as the payments are up and the taxes are paid, your the owner, AT THE MOMENT...
Larry, that man was crazy as a waterbug in an ice house. While I agree we pay taxes on it and the payments, do you not consider your property as yours? Do you let people run over it at will while doing whatever it is that people with no respect for other's things do? I should think not.:)

Asheville is broke, the city council should start the process to annex Biltmore Forest. There is some tax revenue. Then let em gate it to keep out all the locals.

We do not own our property, we rent it from the City and the County in the form of "Property Taxes", don't think so, fail to pay your property taxes for a couple of years. What was that guy's name that recently had his home auctioned off for failing to pay taxes? As for living in a "Gated Community", you have to pay them for your property too, same with condos, it's called "maintenance and security fees" and they can raise them whenever they want, mine got raised 25 percent over the last two years on the condo in Asheville! Heck, Florida raised my property taxes on some lots from $259 per year to $1,987.00 over 3 years, that's rent!

Paris of the South, nice term. I am just back from Paris, France, where not once did I read or hear "Oh yes, Paris, the Asheville of Europe".

Asheville, is nothing, I repeat NOTHING, like Paris, France. I mean at least in Asheville you can still get a good hamburger for less than 11E, er $18.

SO whats up with all this 'gated community' stuff. Do we care about them? I'm a little lost here.

You should have not purchased the condo?

Did they not explain the fees prior to your closing?

Wow, now that was an intelligent post. You'd probably run out of diesel in that old 3/4 ton truck before you get to the gate.

I wonder if a survey has ever been done to see how many child molesters live in gated communities. I bet the percentage is low, and that in itself is a reason to support having them.

But homeowners' fees and politics can sometimes be hell on earth. Especially if there are more transplants than locals.

Why would anyone consider a gated community a social problem? Its probably a group of homeowners/property owners who want to be left the hell alone.

If people wouldnt mess with what doesnt belong to them in the first place, there would be no need for locks, keys or gates.

I live in a condo in a gated community in Florida, and I feal much safer. When you buy in a gated community you dont have to be rich. They check you out to make sure you can pay the maintence & etc.
I don't think that your type could move in even if you were rich. Why would you want to ride through if you dont live there and you weren't invited anyway.
When I lived in N.C. I never had people like you as neighbors. But I still will carry my mace on my key chain, hammers under ther front seat of my car even with the doors locked, & a blackjack on the nightstand by my bed, ball bat behind my door.(I LIVE ON THE 4th floor) only one door in and out.
ARE YOU SURE YOU WANT TO RIDE THROUGH AND TEAR DOWN MY WALLS.
