Even if it is found that the petition drive to restore nonpartisan city elections in Asheville is short 41 votes, it has accomplished good things. It has focused attention on the fact that 4 city councilpeople voted for partisan elections and that 2 of these 4 are currently running for re-election. It has made the public aware that partisan elections will basically eliminate independent candidates by requiring them to get 2,000 signatures in order to qualify; whereas Democratic and Republican candidates are exempt from that requirement. I think the petition drive whether it succeeds or not will have a direct effect on city elections on November 6th.

"incumbents Jan Davis, Bryan Freeborn and Brownie Newman "

Party does not matter here, these are three of those responsible for the trouble Asheville is in. Vote them OUT.

Then after three new ones are in office, let them control choosing a new mayor and vice mayor, then with the 'click' and self focused members out of control, maybe Asheville can get back on the right track.

To bad the other two in office now are not running too!

I've met with Bill Russell for professional advice on a number of occasions. He is an intelligent, genuine business owner and father. He knows how to run a successful business, and I know he would be a valuable asset to our city. We need Bill Russell for Asheville.

Well said "Optimist", but i have this sinking feeling that if this comes down to the wire, my crystal ball is showing me visions of 2000 with that guy and his eye's bulging out to varify the "Hanging Chad". i know there are no chads hanging or otherwise but i can still see the same "scenario" happing here!!!

Either way, I dont see the "Fab 4" surviving there "Arrogance".

I totally agree with Jay. Bill Russell has been my State Farm Agent for years, and he actually CARES about helping people. I trust him to help with my major financial/retirement savings decisions, and I would trust him to help Asheville. I hope he runs for mayor one day.

NO, NO, NO, JAN DAVIS IS NOT AMONG THE "FAB-4"!
Vote your conscience on Jan, but he has been very vocal on his opposition to the change.

Its time we Clean house in Buncombe County and Asheville; the only way to do that is to change administrations. If you don't vote you have no gripe as to what goes on in any government. Register; then get your lazy behind out on election day and vote. Corrupt people are elected by stay at home voters.

AMEN. That's how we ended up with the (mostly) trash we have for council now. When it came voting time, good men did nothing which allowed evil to prevail.

"If you keep on doing what you're doing, you'll keep on getting what you're getting."

If you believe, like I do, that endless unchecked growth is ruining your quality of life, then DO NOT VOTE for anyone who will benefit from that scenario, regardless of what they SAY.

Here are a couple of videos from city council where justification was made to reject a council-mandated referendum:

Does it not strike anyone odd that just under 20% of the petition signatures have been disqualified?

I could have won big money betting this would be the outcome. The powers-that-be will not let this happen. Wake up Asheville!

WHY!
Because we have a dirty democrat regime in control of the election process in Buncombe county and Asheville that runs all the way to Raleigh. That is why we need a house cleaning in this County.

I will donate some $$ to the effort. Anyone game?

Well it looks like the corrupt Democrats are going to get their way. I say investigate the votes that were thrown out. We must stop these liberal corrupt Democrats from hurting this area anymore. They are a embarrassment and if this is thrown out will just add to their smugness. All four most go.

I did not see the petition because I am out of Asheville. Official word was that if the name on petition was not EXACTLY like the voter registration book, t's dotted, i's crossed, they would pitch it out. Should use the Florida reasoning: If you think the voter's intent was Algore but couldn't read, then Algore it was.

We were due for a cleaning moments after the last election. Some of those who got in are beyond clueless? Freeborn? Right. Brownie? All bark and no bite.

I think it's time to redo the vote, this time verifying people as the sign up. I signed a petition that had some questionable names on it.:P
