ALAMOGORDO The only sign here that pilots from Holloman Air Force Base are engaged in the NATO bombing in Kosovo is waggled at motorists by Tim Hardegree.

"No more! Hitlers. Go NATO. Go 49th," says the big placard it covers him from his knees to his chin that Hardegree hoists in front of himself at the busy downtown intersection of 10th Street and White Sands Boulevard.

White Sands Boulevard, also known as U.S. 70, is Alamogordo's strip of motels, convenience stores and fast food restaurants.

Some, but not most, of the drivers honk or wave encouragement at Hardegree as they pass by.

Some, but not most, are going to or coming from the air base, whose main gate is just off U.S. 70 about eight miles southwest of town.

Nobody stops to join Hardegree's one-man cheering section.

For an hour or so during Monday's evening rush hour, nobody even stopped to talk with him.

Maybe it's because he's new in town.

Hardegree, 40, said he served 20 years in the Air Force before retiring three years ago. He was, he said, an engine mechanic for F-16 fighter jets.

He got out of the Air Force in Alaska, then lived in Phoenix until moving to Alamogordo a little more than three months ago.

He has friends in Alamogordo, he explained. And he liked it here when he was stationed at Holloman for a time early in his military career.

Hardegree said he was "stunned" when he heard that one of the F-117A stealth fighters deployed by Holloman's 49th Fighter Wing had been downed possibly by a surface-to-air missile near Belgrade on Saturday.

"They were so successful in Iraq during the Gulf War," he said. "They never came back with even a bullet hole, much less get shot down, if that's indeed what happened."

Hardegree added that he was "glad the pilot got rescued immediately, rather than having to eat bugs in the woods for six days."

He said he has been told by some in town that he's wasting his time. "I'm retired," he said, "it's my time to waste."

Although new to Alamogordo, he is not an entirely unfamiliar sight to local drivers.

During the recent Senate impeachment trial of President Clinton he stood on the same corner, by himself, with an "Impeach Clinton!" sign.

Actually, he's still using the same sign. He has just covered up the Clinton criticism with newspaper and written his new slogans on the other side.

"I despise him," he said of Clinton. "But I support his decision" to authorize airstrikes against Serbia.

I just searched AK and AZ court records and turned up nothing. No divorce, no traffic, no nothing. In AK not all the courts are online so maybe there is still something up there.

Thanks for posting the article on Hardegree it helps to show his personality I am very surprised there was nothing on him from other places he has lived and I am wondering if this was a common practice of his (holding signs on the side of the road). I just can't imagine he would move to Alamogordo and start this.

"Sec. 14.[Indictment and information; grand juries; rights of accused.](1993)

No person shall be held to answer for a capital, felonious or infamous crime unless on a presentment or indictment of a grand jury or information filed by a district attorney or attorney general or their deputies, except in cases arising in the militia when in actual service in time of war or public danger. No person shall be so held on information without having had a preliminary examination before an examining magistrate, or having waived such preliminary examination."

See the PH or PE is a right under an information which is an accusation signed by the DA. There is no such right in the case of an indictment. So, just where to you find these nuggets?

NICELY put! I hope some other people will catch onto your way of thinking. Even if he did have it, it is his responsibillity to get help. Not go and murder your neighbor and then claim an insanity defense because you dont want to take the true punishment you deserve. As soon as the constitutional process is done and he is convicted, he should die.

The proviso stands shoulder to shoulder with the most basic guarantees of individual liberty against the power of the state, such as the right of self-government (art. Hey Caveman: It was your wifey you tried to make everyone believe Hardegree has PTSD, not me. Do you finally understand the concept of a "right?" If Hardegree is guilty, a sharp attorney could get him off because Ceballes illegally waives preliminary hearings for the accused. I don't know if he tricked Hardegree into signing a waiver but Ceballes usually just claims the accused has waived his right when he hasn't. That's what he does. To make this really clear, even for you, once a person is arrested and arraigned he/she cannot go before a grand jury UNLESS they the accused, and they alone, sign a waiver or the DA dismisses the charges, gets an indictment from the grand jury and re-charges him. Do you want a murderer to go free, if he is a murderer just because Ceballes is a cocky egomaniac who ignores the law and makes his own? Bite me.

You do not "get injured" by PTSD. It is a disorder caused by severe trauma which can happen to anyone, anytime, any place and at any age.
