Inspiring cheats - The Advocate Weekly Online
#1 Aug 19, 2011
Bill Donovan's column on "Inspiring Cheats" is one of the best articles I've read on the current state of education. As a retired teacher and administrator with experience in NY, VT and FL, I have seen first hand the problems that public education faces. Mr. Donovan's opinion makes a great deal of sense and he states it with authority and brevity. I will admit that, while I was a third grade teacher, I helped my students on "benchmark" tests the school gave to determine the readiness of the students in passing the statewide standardized tests. I read the questions to them and guided them in looking for key words and previously "learned" strategies that might help them figure out the answer. I like to think that it wasn't just because our names and results were posted for all to see, but that I truly felt it was of no value to give my students a "one size fits all" test that all were not prepared to pass. Any competent teacher can tell you which students are performing below grade level without benefit of a standardized test!
