I too love train travel:
Momma and I were hitting DC 2-3 times/year.., always by train.
Great ride, right into Union.., from there, pick up the metro to Dupont Circle...

I'm actually suprised this has some Republican backing - they killed the Milwaukee-to-Madison rail two years ago up here.

It all comes down to dollars and ridership, it's too bad in a way that our society isn't rail loving instead of car loving, but our history and shared psyche just don't support that like it does over in Europe. Of course to be fair over there distances are much shorter, and they don't mind waiting in lines which is anathema to Americans. That's why we invented fast food and cup holders in cars after all [grins]

They need to take a colser look. If they put more stops in and between more larger cities it could take a lot of cars off the road. I like the system they have in New Mexico.
You can go all over with that train. People ride ,take bikes aboard and it makes life easier for many that would have to drive longer and cut done on the cost of GAS.

Got to agree.
I've a total buttload of cars which I'd gladly give up if there was better public transportation in my region.
As I said earlier, we love DC by train and occasionally fly to NYC.
Their public transport is phenomenal and reasonable compared to the costs of owning a car (or three!).

....when i was a kid, we would ride take the train from San Antonio to Fort Worth almost monthly......it was great....last time i took the train was in 1963 or thereabouts....now, to catch Amtrak, we would have to drive 20 miles north of us to a small town with a station but no place to park more than 10 cars, in an unlighted parking lot, on the 'wrong side of the tracks'....it would be nice if the train stopped in more population centers where there was, you know, folks who might take the train.....i know we would.....
