The question is will it protect gay men? I doubt it. It is interesting historically that Africans were not particularly afraid of same-sex relationship before the missionnairies destroyed aboriginal African cultures. In fact, there were tribes where homosexual marriage, of a special sort, was accepted and normal. Then, the missionaries came....wrecking havoic on all and sundry.
