Well, whatever the excuse, there is obviously something wrong with this scoring system because there is no way that Evan should have won over Johnnie. The ONLY thing Evan did better was a footwork sequence. Everything other element was performed better by Johnnie. Evan struggled & messed up every landing on his jumps - he looked nervous and tight. He managed to stay on his feet, but barely. Conversely, Johnnie ended every jump with a beautiful landing and smooth exit - perfect execution of all of these enormously difficult jumps.

Evan barely survived his freeskate - Johnnie skated his with ease, confidence, beauty and perfecvtion. No way Johnnie didn't win this competition - and when they announced Evan as the winner I was reminded of the feeling I got when Russian dance couples would be victorious even though when one of them FELL during their free dance.

So much for new scoring systems - the deserving winner is still being robbed.

While I certainly understand everyone's frustration with the new scoring system, I think we also have to admit it is a huge stride in the right direction as compared with the old 6.0 system. With the old system bias was rampant and "lifetime achievement" points were awarded frequently. At least there is a monitored system where every element is judged and given a base mark by a technical specialist. I have to wonder if everyone is having a hard time with Evan's win because we are still used to the old method where two clean skates were more important than two difficult ones with a few bobbles. The fact is, Evan had a lot more difficulty on his spins and footwork. Johnny made it look better, but Evan was awarded for his difficulty in every minute detail.

Well...unfortuately, while Johnny's program was skated generally cleaner than Evan's, particularly jump-wise, he didn't have as much content or as much difficulty. He only did two jump combinations, compared with Evan's three, his spins were graded lower because they lacked the changing positions and the speed, and his transitions between his jumps were simpler. So Johnny skated Johnny's program better than Evan skated Evan's program, but Evan had more points to work with, and so he won, plain and simple.

Thank you for your brilliant explanation! I have been so tired of everyone getting down on Evan. It is nice to hear from someone who understands the new scoring system!
