Thoughts on a community supported Internet radio studio

I'm looking for opinions. Here's the story...
Right now, I run a community supported Internet radio studio in downtown Los Angeles. Well, to be completely upfront, I'm not so positive Los Angeles is ready or interested in "community". Sure, there's pockets of good people here and there's many things I love about LA, but lately, I've been wondering if what I'm trying to do is simply in the wrong location.
I used to live in SF. I lived in the TL. I love San Francisco. I spent some time there recently and it really has me considering moving our radio studio.
But this isn't something to just jump in to. It only makes sense if this is something that the community would find useful and it really only makes sense if people utilize it for the betterment of mankind...or hey, at the very least, put out some kind of informative, free form communication that actually SAYS something.
We got caught in this rut with the entertainMEnt industry down here. Sure, people love the studio, we have lots of good times and a lot of great content has been created, but at the end of the day, people in "the industry" really only care about what you can do for them. Giving back really isn't high on the priority list.
We have a full blown radio studio. Myself and my business partner (who already lives in Oakland) have spent a pretty penny to build a quality radio studio with everything you would expect from a full blown terrestrial station. We're internet, but we're live...we can take calls, all our shows are available as downloads from iTunes and various other places. It really is a radio station that just happens to use the internet as its transmitter.
I recently visited KMUD community radio in Humboldt County and man...I loved it. I literally walked in to the place not knowing who to talk to and what they would think of just some dude walking in to their station. I was welcomed like I had been working there for 20 years. It was beautiful. That type of vibe I don't think is possible in Los Angeles.
Anyway, this is the first of my "feelers" to see who would be interested in this sort of thing. I personally am not in this for profit, but, at the same time, we need to pay for rent and expenses.
I'm also assuming San Francisco might already have people doing this very thing right now. I'd love to hear about them.
