Pelosi needs to involve public in park name change

Pelosi is doing a wonderful job with all the issues she brings forward. This may be a smaller issue but still important. More funding for our parks is necessary in order to keep them beautiful. The leash law is an issue. I love to see the dogs enjoy the space as well. I do not think commercial dog walkers should be allowed leashed or off leash. Too many dogs to control.

Born and raised here and I am so pleased that we have all this open space to enjoy. However, it should not be under federal jurisdiction. It should be under state and/or county. It is overwellmingly used by locals it is not fair for the rest of the country to pay for what we enjoy.

As to the jurisdictional issue, the blame lays primarily with the City and County of San Francisco. The deeds to former City lands such as Ocean Beach and Fort Funston only gave the GGNRA title to the high water mark. Thus the City continues to own the tidelands but will not fess up to that fact, either because of ignorance or a want of desire to manage the lands. Nevertheless, the City has trust obligations over the tidelands and must exercise trust responsibility over them. The coward Newsom will not touch the issue, however, because he thinks that doing so will alienate "conservation" groups because tidelands must remain open to recreational uses. There is little choice but to sue and force the City to honor its trust obligations over these tidelands. |

I want Federal control because federal parks have better law enforcement of rules. Our park experiences should no tbe ruined by for profit dog walkers, our park experience should not be ruined by close encounters of the dogs and the dog crap. But I would let SF keep its parts. They are so trashed from the great highway to aquadic park no amount of enforcement will ever keep these areas under control. Let SF keep its cesspool.

Does this mean that they will stop "developing" it and handing it over to private profiteers? like Cavallo Point where you need a parking permit to go fishing? How about the giant crackerbox to house Donald Fisher's tax write off modern "art" collection?

Most excellent article. The one thing I would add is that it's not just about dogs. Land closures within GGNRA over the past two decades have excluded people as well as pets, and expect more of that if the federal government is allowed to proceed unchecked in its direction of managing this urban park land as if it were the Grand Tetons. Hikers, bikers, esquestrians as well as dog folks all need be concerned.
. Balance is the key word -- between recreation and resource protection -- and the proposed name change is very symbolic of where the National Park Service sees the place for "recreation" in that equation: NOWHERE. |

This stinks of Clinton's roadless initiateve back in the 90's. Sounds like another federal land grab.

1) how sad that my comments were deleted.
2) i'll try again. 3) the original land grant deed from san francisco to the ggnra were on the proviso that the ggnra maintain historic recreation. the properties have a legal designated mandate of 'recreation first.' nancy pelosi along with the ggnra would like to change the legal designation to 'conservation first.' i say,'along with the ggnra' because the ggnra has been using the new monniker in their website and in printed publications for a good 6 months, now. fortunately, the city of san francisco included a reversion clause in the original deed that does not expire. it is the duty of the current san francisco governing body to take back these lands, should the ggnra attempt to breach this initial mandate. 4) the recent federal ruling was on the surface about the ggnra failing to adhere to proper procedure. the federal judge based his decision largely on the fact that the ggnra could not prove an environmental emergency existed. i repeat, in 1975, the ggnra could not prove in federal court, that an environmental emergency existed. they have since, in spite of declaring several emergencies since then, not provided any new evidence of such emergencies. 5) to show you all how much of this is politically driven, i attended a meeting of the san francisco animal care and welfare meeting where the agenda item was to consider a reversion resolution that would then be passed along to the board of supervisors. one of the panel members said, "i don't want to see any more facts and scientific data..." and proceeded to vote against the resolution. need i say more? of all the things nancy pelosi should be doing in office, this clearly ranks last. she should be voted out of office. |

Yes why would any of the Dem's let the FACTS get in the way?

What a joke naming the parkafter Phil Burton and his COKe Smoking Brother. Moscone and rest of these bums got what they deserved. Dan White did not have to kill Milk but Moscone was a child molester in Sacramento. He liked the little underage girls, and too bad Tony Saprano was not around in SF when this scum was in power. Moscone would have been gone before White ever appeared on the horizon.

Frank in Mill Valley has hit it. Once it is 'nationalized' they can bring in the Curry Corp from Yosemite, etc. and let them commercialize... yuck.

Get her involved and the area would become Pelosi Park
