If it's so tough, why join?

Much easier to be who you are than change for someone/something you are not already comfortable with.

Religion. For those who are followers and lack self-esteem.

I left because of the historical treatment of blacks and the treatment of others womens wives by JS (also doctrinal issues). I also got tired of people bearing their testimonies of how much they loved the church, but in the same breath complain about how much it was a burden to serve in the church, only to say they do it because the believe God will bless them more. There are alot of good teaching the mormons believe in, but Mormonism just wansn't for me. I look at my joining of that church as an episode in life to gain knowledge of something only to lead me somewhere else. I hold no ill feelings.

Most religions, but especially Mormonism, are more easily accepted if one can turn off one's rationality. I suspect that's why so many of them stress faith over reason. Reason, unlike faith, does not lead to ultimate answers, but faith, unlike reason, does not always lead to fact.

I suspect those, convert or otherwise, who are having the most problem with Mormonism are those who haven't yet given up the unfortunate habit of rational thinking. Rational folks have difficulty making irrational leaps of faith.

Is that a bad thing? I would say I have limits on faith and I know when things are fishy. Some cannot discern faith from rational thinking.

No, I don't think rational thinking is a bad thing at all if one can accept the consequences of confining one's self to rational thought. Rational thought forces one to live with the fact that one does not have and my never have all the answers no matter how much one may want those answers.

Irrational faith has led to too many tragic historical episodes.

"as for family being important unless they are an unbeliever, I've never known this to be true in the mormon faith. We are taught that we are all heavenly fathers children and he loves the unbeliever just as he loves the devout. Do we as parents love any of our children differently? I know I don't, and I don't beleive he does either."
Just for instance. I have seen testimony of exmos who went on a mission that said they believed that THEY(the mishy) was breaking up families. Because if he converted some one, they would leave their spouse.
Now the convert is left with a broken-home. My personal belief is that family bonds are more important than a religion and that changing religions or becoming religious isn't good enough of a reason to break up a family.
