The universe that humans are aware of according to current scientific evidence is many billions of years old. The size of the known universe is several million times the distance that light travels in one year, which is a distance beyond what anything any of us could imagine. So to be absolutely sure about what originally existed before this particular universe is likely, at this time, almost impossible. We have no way of traveling billions of years back in time to witness what occurred, nor do we now have any way to travel millions of light years distance to the edge of our known universe to see what might be beyond that. Science has theories based on proven mathematical calculations and knowledge of energy, light, etc., but right now they can't prove these theories are absolutely true. Religions on the other hand have theories based on myths and legends of ancient people, who had big imaginations but almost no scientific knowledge at all. We can't be certain if any of the theories explain the beginning of our universe, but to put faith in myths seems to have no merit at all.

I think you have it nailed. The lights have been out so long that he may be the first visible sign of entropy claiming our universe. But of course, before he winks out completely, he will morph into another identity and we'll start at square one again.
