Coral Records Show Ocean Thermocline Rise With Global Warming

Oct 12, 2010 Full story: Pollution Online 13

Researchers looking at corals in the western tropical Pacific Ocean have found records linking a profound shift in the depth of the division between warm surface water and colder, deeper water traceable to recent global warming.

How much is as yet unknown:
-
"We're trying to find a way to understand how the warm water in the tropical Pacific has changed in the last century, but more importantly during the last several decades," said Branwen Williams
-
What plagues modelers and researchers alike is the limited amount of information available about the ocean when studying climate change.
-
"We think the thermocline rose when the PDO shifted," she said.
-
Another report:
"Greenhouse gases not causing coral decline?"
Some environmentalists have long tried to blame the decline of coral reefs on man-made global warming. But now comes word from the Florida Keys that a very common bacterium is actually the primary villain. According to the Environmental News Network, a study by the National Academy of Sciences found that white pox disease, which has already killed most of the magnificent elkhorn coral on some reefs near Key West, is caused by a fecal bacteria found in the intestines of humans and animals. Elkhorn coral is an important Carribean species, providing both food and shelter for many reef dwellers. But while the source of the bacteria is still unknown, one thing for sure is that it didn't come from the greenhouse gases of America's tailpipes and smokestacks.

Earthling, your cite (of CFACT) is, as usual, an oil-industry-funded political brothel:

There is no question that in some populous resort areas, bacteria are also killing coral. However, that does not pertain in any way to the change in thermocline depth in the central Pacific.

Please try to keep up.

If you want to follow the money, Norfie, you only need to look at how much is spent on the climate science industry.
The fossil fuel industry spending is a pittance by comparison.
You know it, I know it and anyone with eyes knows it.

Actually, this is proof that the earth isn't receiving any where near as much energy from the sun as it once was. The fact is that water temperatures drive air temperatures and keep what would be as hot as Death Valley at a nice balmy temperature. Since the thermocline is rising it means the energy in the surface area must be less, otherwise the thermocline would be sinking into the depths. Of course the coeans lag far behind the climate in general so we could be seeing what is leftovers from the last major cold spell.

Of course the source of that information just happened to come from a GreenPeace hit group who has thier sights set on Exxon. Otherwise all the Big Oil donations add up to pocket change with the largest being Cheveron at a little over sixty grand over between 1994-1998, five thousand from Exxon in 1997-1998, twenty five thousand from DaimlerChrysler Corporation, and a lousy five hundred from Ford.

So if the only source of infornmation that they are a Big Oil Brothel is an Enviromental Whore then you are the one who needs to keep up.

Oil industry funding of media is pocket change? Is that what you call Saudi Prince Al-Waleed's $3 billion into News Corp, which broadcasts climate denial 24/7, worldwide, through media outlets such as Fox News and the Wall Street Journal?

News Corp's CURRENT market cap is $44 billion, making Al-Waleed's 7 percent ownership of that science denial machine worth $3.08 billion.

Even coral can adapt to climate change:
"A study by the University of Exeter provides the first evidence that coral reefs can recover from the devastating effects of climate change. Published Monday 11 January in the journal PLOS One, the research shows for the first time that coral reefs located in marine reserves can recover from the impacts of global warming."
