"There is also the matter of how many jobs, especially higher-level ones, are never even posted and depend on word-of-mouth and informal networks, in many cases leaving blacks at a disadvantage"
Blacks purposely segregate themselves into African this group or Black that group while at university and then complain that they don't have the network and connections others do, lol, just lol

Well, it IS an article about race, a subject that does indeed need a LOT of debate.
In this case, even though it's an old article, I can imagine the situation has not changed much. What may have changed though is the way race is perceived since this was written. Americans can clearly see that as Obama has risen a virtual war path against white Americans has been declared. And I don't just mean the escalating trend of random, race-based attacks on white people either.
I am also addressing the way any expression of pride in accomplishments by white Americans is instantly shouted down as racism or countered with tales of slavery, the Crusades or "stealing" land from the natives. Can you imagine if someone did that in reverse? Say a black man starts talking about MLK and a white person says "Yea, he was a good guy, but don't forget Malcolm X was assassinated by black guys".
It would be just as outrageous.
On the issue of employment though, it's a little easier to see what's happening. Even among white applicants employers are trying to filter out problems, troublemakers and malcontents. The guy in this article removed his reference to being a member of the "African-American Business Students Association". Why?
Maybe because he recognized that at it's core the term "African-American" is divisive. Can you imagine a white applicant using his membership in the "White Business Students Association"? I'd wager his resume hit the shredder even faster than Jamal's. Another thing this article makes obvious is that blacks are starting to realize that naming their children after things like brands of liquor or fictional tribal monikers will screw their future.
It's also interesting to see how black applicants are playing games to get interviews and are then shocked by the reaction they get when their "game" is discovered. Name a business that actually wants that sort of last-minute surprise. Pretending to be white, which is exactly what they are doing, is dishonest. Who wants to hire someone who proves dishonesty during an interview? But this happens to white people as well. They look good on paper then arrive with facial tattoos, eyebrow rings, half their head shaved the other 3 feet long. They too fall victim to "discrimination".
Want a real treat? Go to the casting office at a Disney park and see who walks in looking for a job. You'll see the most generic cross section of America regardless of race. Why? Because that's what Disney wants and insists on. NASA on the other hand, doesn't give a squat what people look like as long as they are willing to work 90 hour weeks. GE wants workers who are willing to be very unpopular and climb over everyone else to get ahead, a virtual shark tank. IBM is much the same way as are most top end restaurants (though they too expect a "professional" appearance).
Yes, discrimination in the workplace is alive and well. But race is only a segment of the problem, it's not even a big segment.
