I'm a freshman in high school, and I have to start thinking about college. I want to be a marine biologist, but I don't know what colleges or universities that offer these kinds of courses. Any help please?

PS, has anyone on here (literally anyone) done any deep sea exploration? I'm fascinated with the creatures of the abyss and want to know what one of those dives are like. Like I said, fourteen. And I want to know a lot about my choice.

I am a deep-sea biologist/explorer. What is a dive like? Incredible. Believe it or not, I used to be a pilot of the research submersible Alvin and have made over a hundred dives in this vehicle. The most memorable one? My first dive, to hot springs at 2500 m on the Galapagos spreading center. I saw giant tubeworms, clams, mussels. The setting is volcanic, so the seabed is hard rock, all twisty and sculpted. The viewports of the submarine are very small, but it is easy to see the animals, because the water is so clear.

I happen to know a huge amount about colleges and universities that offer courses in marine science, because I happen to teach at one of the best of them them, Duke University, and to run their Marine Lab on the North Carolina coast. I do deep-sea research and exploration, but many of our professors study issues in conservation in marine systems. One professor studies marine mammals, other study sea turtles, still otehrs crabs and worms.

Other schools specialize in other areas - you can study at any major and many smaller universities or colleges in coastal states and find excellent programs in marine science.

Good luck! Go Duke!

Hey I am a sophmore that has always wanted to be a Marine Biologist. My dad told me about it when I was little. After his death When people asked what i wanted to be I would say a Marine Biologist. Some one told me taht i would not be able to do it because i was a girl and i am not the smartest in math but I looked them in the eye and said if i put my mind to it i can do what ever the heck i want. So to all those who might evr feel discouraged just remember that you can do anything you put your mind to.
