Oil not cause of earthquake
The tremors that hit the East Africa region and originated from an earthquake in Lake Albert , is not a result of the intensified oil and gas exploration activities, a Ugandan official has confirmed.

Agreed with that comment.
It appears that the East African rift arm (Kenya) is relatively quiet, and that active rifting is occurring in the West african rift arm centred over the Virunga Hotspot (Rwanda/Congo/Uganda borders).
The Lake Albert area rift valley has a number of Pleistiocene-Holocene carbonatite volcanoes on the rift arms but this one is a rift quake centred in the centre of the lake. Looks like the carbonatite volcanoes will be staying quiet for a while longer.
A look @ the depth of the events is also handy. Oil drilling induced compaction quakes are 0-8Km in general, with the bulk at 0-4 where the bulk of the drillstems reach down to. Tectonic quakes on the other hand are typically deeper 8-35Km being typical in rift areas and on rare occasions can reach to 50Km in cases of "plate lurch" due to crustal relaxation events (following a magnitude [email protected] a subduction zone).
As the depths were greater than 10Km it is definitely a tectonic event.
ps. The other half of Goma still needs to be plated over by lava, the last event @ Nyiragongo missed quite a bit of it. a decent rift event there should do the biz.
Have a nice day: Ag
