Nice item.

One other hiding in plain sight item is the electrochemical waste sludge from aluminium smelting.

Rare earths are trivalent & also more electronegative than aluminium so the result is that they tend to remain as oxides (REE)2O3, and precipitate out as an oxide sludge and end up in the tailings. The interesting thing is that the oxides such as Ce2O3 are coloured and are (along with Fe2O3) responsible for the red sludge in the electrochemical sludge waste.

The hard bit is removing other oxides such as Pb, Hg, Cu, & As that also tend to accumulate in the sludge.

Happy hunting.

Have a nice day: Ag
