The long term effects are most certainly known, and they are both horrible and devastating to everyone except the energy industry. If this were truly about 'safety', the 64 million dollars would go to plant upgrades, not techniques best known for use in oil exploration.

According to the environmental Impact Assessment, these 260db blasts every 13 seconds will kill as many marine creatures as the asteroid killed dinosaurs!

How anyone can ask me with a straight face, to allow them to deafen 20 or 30 Great Blue Whales (which means a slow, agonizing death) and thousands of Porpoises etc, is beyond the pale. We should also be doing more to protect the new Marine Protected Areas and Davidson Seamount. Finally, the cumulative impacts of seismic air canons off both Diablo Canyon and San Onofre Nuclear Waste Plants are staggering, to put it mildly.

This is all about looking for oil at a time when global warming must be addressed, and quickly if we hope to survive into the 22nd century.
