Halema'uma'u celebrates 5 years of eruptions
The March 19, 2008 eruption created a hole 115-feet-wide. Since then, the crater is now nearly 700-feet-wide -- the size of 21 Olympic swimming pools.

There was always a connection between the summit magma chamber and the dike feeding the Puu'O'o lateral vent.
The reason for the development of the current Halemaumau vent is that the walls of the dike from the main magma chamber feeding the Puu'O'o series shield group are crystallising high temperature crystals from the magma and are gradually constricting the walls of the dike allowing the magma to back up into Halemaumau crater and forming the current vent.
Puu,O,o actually sits over the footprint of the 7.4 quake that opened the rift immediately prior to the start of the current eruption.
In absence of any further earthquake induced widening of the Puu'O'o region, the dike will eventually constrict, and lava overflows will begin to infill the main Halemaumau crater.
Have a nice day: Ag
