Nice article:

Told me one important bit, that it is in fact not part of the Taupo volcanic zone despite the white appearance of its denuded landscape.

The SiO2 content at 50-60% indicates Basaltic andesite & Andesite. The last output of Juvenile rock from the crater was also measured as basaltic andesite. Composition of that dome is currently unknown (not sure whether it has been sampled yet).

Appears that the white scenery is likely a coating of kaolinitised old rock and clay from the intracrater hydrothermal zone.

Volcano appears to be a facsimile of Ebeko in the Kurile arc which is another mud monster slowly cooking up clay in the core hydrothermal zone and destroying the old edifice in the process.

Have a nice day: Ag
