Tendency towards obesity is really in the genes

Ever wonder why some people can eat anything they want without gaining weight, while others fight a year round battle of the bulge? British researchers confirmed yesterday what many weight-watchers and ... Full Story

Congratulations! You have just sanctioned those greedy OUT OF CONTROL people in the 150-1000lb bracket to continue to over eat more...."it's in my genes, I can't help it" will become their theme song and mission statement.
What about self-control, huh. Thank God OVER-EATING is not in my family or my husband's family genes.

great. another excuse for people to supersize everything.
there is another gene we humans possess, it's called the ability to say no when asked if we want a 2 lb. hamburger to go with that 20 oz. bag of chips.

The REAL issue Re: Obesity is that highly processed/high carb/junk foods most people eat are HIGHLY ADDICTIVE. The Atkins diet and other low carb plans control cravings by focusing on foods that aren't physically addictive thereby balancing blood sugar levels.
High carb/low fat diet/low calorie diets leave people with tremendous physical cravings for junk food.

That would explain why you have no compassion whatsoever. Obesity is a life-long struggle. Its an addiction that creates self-hatred that is just reinforced by people like you. We can't all be as perfect as you and your family are. Go find someone else to bully.

A wise person once said, "An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure." If you know that obesity could be in your path, use it to your advantage. Your cells don't care about the quality of your excuses.

Thank you for adding a little levity. Humor is at least a little better than meanness.

THIS QUOTE FROM THE ARTICLE,"Everybody believed up till then that obesity was a moral weakness, that people just had to pull themselves together," Snitker said. "We know now that isn't the case." JUST SOUNDS LIKE A BAD CASE OF PREJUDICE. ANYONE WITH A WEIGHT PROBLEM COULD HAVE SAID, AND DID SAY, THAT IT WAS NOT A CASE OF MORAL WEAKNESS WHEN ANYONE GOT FAT, OR OBESE, BUT PREJUDICE GOT IN THE WAY ... AND EVEN TODAY, REGARDLESS OF WHAT THIS SNITKER PERSON SAYS, IT STILL GETS IN THE WAY!

Get off your high horse and go back and read the 5th and 6th paragraphs.
No one is sanctioning out-of-control eating. The research shows that it's PART environmental and PART genetic.
You're also contradicting yourself when you suggest people should show self-control and then thanking God that over-eating is not in your genes or your husband's. You can't have it both ways. You cannot claim that you show self-control and then say 'it's not in my genes.' If you have such great self-control, it really doesn't matter what's in your genes, does it? If it's not in your genes, you don't need much self-control, do you?
Sounds to me like those with the 'bad' gene have to work harder to accomplish the same results obtained by those who don't have the gene.
Some people eat more than they should because of emotional/psychological reasons. It may not be genetic in their case and mabye they need to deal with the underlying causes of their overeating. Or maybe it's still genetic and it's just worse because of their other problems.
And why do you say 150 lbs is out of control? My DH is 6'3" and at 180 is pretty slim!
Don't be so self-rightous and judgemental!

Obesity is the last sanctioned prejudice. Yes, I am obese. No, it is not what I eat. I have a medical condition called hypothyroidism, for which I have started to take medication. My first doctor put me on a protein diet and I gained weight. My second doctor put me on a cardiac patient's diet and I gained weight. I was hospitalized and put on a 400 calorie a day diet and I GAINED WEIGHT. Thanks to a gland the size of a pea in my neck, I am 200 lbs over what I "should" be. Thanks to this gland not working, a teenaged boy felt he had the right and privelege to oink and moo at me in the mall the other day. PREJUDICE=to pre judge, to make assumptions based on wrong information. UNTIL YOU KNOW, KEEP YOUR MOUTH SHUT

maybe you should change your name to "hey i have no accountbility for the things i shove in my mouth so not only do i blame my genes, i blame people who make a conscience decision to stay healthy" maybe you should hate yourself, eventually you will either realize how dangerous you lifestyle is and change it, or you will choke on a hamburger that could provide a meal for at least 10 healthy sized human beings.

All humans are predisposed to be obese....when you eat more calories than you expend!!!

In the last 20 years Americans have gotten fatter. Have their genes suddenly changed or have their lifestyles? My money is on their lifestyles.

Lifestyle is equal to diet and exercise.

Eat less + Exercise more = healthy person DUH!!!

They reason why this country is so obese is because of the simple fact that Americans are lazy!!!! People need to remember that you are what you eat. If your stuffing your face Big Mac's and whopppers, then go and sit on the couch for three or four hours its not going to help with this "huge" problem.

Did you read the article? It said: "That doesn't mean weight-watchers should give up. Scientists say a healthy diet and regular exercise are still important."

Do you instead propose that we not research the issue? Or not report the results of research?

No one said it was an "excuse" for anything, but your attitude that obese people need an "excuse" supports that bigoted view that obesity is a moral failing.

Your pathetic..unlike the school yard kid who at least teases and taunts in the open, you're hiding behind pathetic little screen names. I am not obese, and I love to exercise, but I also know that I cannot judge someone who's shoes I have not walked in. Maybe you'd feel better about yourself if you did the same.
