I accidentally found this - Operation Haze in 1997, also a documentary in History Channel "Haze Hell Over Asia".

The haze had been disrupting neighbouring countries since 1983 (wow, I was not even born yet). And yet, for that many years, it was still as 'uncontrollable' as the fire itself. Maybe the government there have not heard of rules, laws and punishments.

In 1997, Malaysia was declared in a State of Emergency due to haze and sent 1,200 firefighters team to Sumatera and Kalimantan for about 17 Days before the monsoon rain came to the rescue.

True Malindo spirit.

I stumble upon the article while googling information about haze. In that particular year, Malaysia lost about 0.3% GDP or nearly RM1 bil. That exclude costs of firefighting operations (Operation Haze 1997) in Sumatera. Luckily it was not an annual charity operation to our neighbour. It will cost Malaysia a fortune due to other government's inefficiency and bad management of its own country.
