Regarding Paul Gaysford Jan. 3 letter, " Realizing the national condition ": Amen! Future generations of Japanese will wonder why so little was done to prevent the nuclear plant catastrophe at Fukushima, among other things.

Not sure what to say about this. The EDO period and the idea of sustainability is nice. However, there is no real clear reasoning given to piss on nuclear power as a clean alternative to dirty coal, or green power that takes up a LOT of scarce real estate. Japan has few choices and a lot of limitations. And they were just using the 'capitalist model' of risk assessment. They though they could get away with preparing for a smaller tsunami than the exceptional one they actually got. The problem is not properly Japan or nuclear power but the decision making process of profits vs lives.

It was well known some of their nuclear reactor tecnology was out of date.
