Protecting a birthright

So far, 13 House Representatives, mostly from southern states, are in favor of changing the act to “require that only the children of citizens, legal immigrants permanently living in the country, or immigrants in the military, be granted citizenship.” In other words, they don’t want any more illegal immigrants having babies in the United States and thereby ensuring their child has a birthright of citizenship.

Asante says the 13th Amendment was a game changer for Africans in America. It ended slavery and opened the door to the 14th Amendment, which made Africans full citizens under the law in America, and the 15th Amendment, which gave black men the right to vote.

Opinion: Rep. Steve King’s bill to deny birthright citizenship is unconstitutional

The language of the 14th Amendment is clear:“All persons born or naturalized in the United States, and subject to the jurisdiction thereof, are citizens of the United States and of the State wherein they reside.” For over a century, the Supreme Court has interpreted this to mean that anyone born here is a citizen; in Kim Wong Ark v. U.S.(1898), the court found that the U.S.-born son of Chinese immigrants was indeed an American. So although King may not like the 14th Amendment, he cannot legislate around it. The Constitution is the law of the land.

I was driving home from work one day and pulled alongside the sweetest 1970 little black T-Bird convertible. I drive a 71 280 SL, so I couldn't help but notice how pristine and immaculate it was. On Sunset Blvd.[NOT in Lawrenceburg] in rush hour traffic, we weren't going very fast, but on the third light (side by side), she accelerated through the yellow, and I stopped. When I started up on green and rounded the next curve, I couldn't believe my eyes. A brand new Mercedes sedan had crossed the center line and hit her head on. The door was open, and she was a bloodied mess, and the small child I had not seen before belted into the passenger side was being consoled by a hotel attendant. I was so distraught (clearly, she was badly injured), I couldn't let it go after I got home. If I hadn't braked for the light, it would have been me, because I had been in the outside lane. I called Cedars Sinai, smoozed a nurse and found out that she was stable and would be ok. The guy in the big Mercedes? He was on his cellphone talking, had been at the hospital agonizing and had apologized to all for being distracted. Humm. Bye bye pretty T-bird. It was totaled. But, the little one was fine.

Same old GOP: A new bill to stop ‘anchor babies’

It turns out Bachmann is not alone in giving a failed effort one more try. This time it’s Congressman Steve King. The Iowa Republican is once again advocating to “clarify” the portion of the 14th Amendment that protects birthright citizenship. The Amendment states that “all persons born or naturalized in the United States, and subject to the jurisdiction thereof, are citizens of the United States and of the state wherein they reside.” King is not opposed to the Amendment on its face, but maintains that the framers did not account for illegal immigration.
