Smilodon did not have a strong bite. It did, however, have very strong neck muscles which it probably used to force its sabre teeth into prey, almost like an axe I suppose.

Pound for pound, the strongest bite of any mammalian carnivore in history is that of Thylacoleo carnifex, the Marsupial Lion. Australia's undisputed badass :D

Smilodon's bite force wasn't huge just so you know, size isn't everything. T. carnifex had a stronger bite yet it was only about half the size.

As for modern animal, i would think the title of strongest mammalian carnivore bite goes to either the Jaguar (Panthera onca) or Spotted Hyena (Crocuta crocuta). Are we talking strongest overall or pound for pound? There is a big difference.

If we are talking pound for pound then perhaps Australia's other marsupial carnivores (such as the Tasmanian Devil) will be towards the top of the list.

Not 100% sure though.

S.populator to be exact, and why the past tense when refering to the Siberian Tiger?
