UVA Professor William Wulf resigns over "a BOV that so poorly understands UVa, and academic culture" and that "the BOV has perpetrated are the worst example of corporate governance I have ever seen." It is interesting that his online UVa bio lists him as the "AT&T Professor of Computer Science and University Professor" but his resignation letter makes no reference to his own sell-out to corporate sponsorship.
His resignation letter makes no reference to his official title, i.e., the "AT&T" corporate sponsorship. A person of true integrity would have made a full and honest representation of his title -- in Prof. Wulf's case he was less than honest, provably.
Did I say "hypocrite"?
Brother, please. AT&T was funding basic research long before you were a zygote. Prof. Wulf is not resigning because he doesn't understand commercialism. He's resigning because he sees the threat of commercialism taking over the vision and mission of the university. And it's coming for you as well, unless you're happy with your UVa diploma coming with a tear off coupon for Taco Bell.

I can't say that running the University is in a faculty members job description. For one thing they already have a full-time job. Or do they? Maybe that was something Dr. Sullivan was tasked to rectify.
Seems to me when 80% of the Board votes to approve an interim President in the face of faculty demands to reinstate the old President, they have a pretty good idea the old President has to go and some strong reasons for following through.
A sad end to a great career over his own hubris.

Dr. Wulf is *legendary* in the field of computer science across the country. This is a huge loss for UVA.
Please, I've been in the computer field for 45 years and never heard of him. He is a legend in his own mind and grandstanding to boot. He didn't have to quit.

Secrecy breeds the public's perpception that there is a nefarious reason for the secrecy.

The image of professors resigning, instructors taking jobs out of state, and staff boycotting the start of fall classes paints a dim picture of the Charlottesville and Albemarle County governments' fantasy of saving the economy by way of increased restaurant revenues--which is a dumb idea anyway.

I'd like to urge faculty reading this to NOT resign and to realize that protesting the BOV at the expense of providing UVA Students their quality education would only make this unfortunate situation so much worse. President Sullivan has said in her statements the importance of maintaining the quality of the UVA education, having such valuable professors leave would be the exact opposite. As a student in the Class of 2013, I am not in a position to transfer out of the university in protest, and I would really like my degree to be achieved with, at the very least, the same academic standards as before even though it may be unfortunately and unavoidably tarnished by the scandal of the past few weeks. Do not take this out on the students, our education has been mucked by the politics enough.
Busy partying with the Trinity crowd? I don't think this current controversy will cause your future degree's validity to diminish.
