"Officials did not understand until after purchasing the upgrade that most of the district's employees could refuse to use the system, labeling it a change in work rules that needed to be collectively bargained into union contracts. As of an update last summer, only 15 percent of employees' hours were being tracked."

Thanks to their Union. But keep blowing that tax money, school administrators. The masses of *sses won't realize how you waste their money. And those school teachers...do you think they would go along with anybody keeping track of what they are really doing?

The employees of Columbus City Schools will be better off. Mr Houpe is an uneducated fool (no post secondary degrees). I am surprised that there has been no mention of the dialing system that he purchased by a friend's company, the thin client system in the district that does not work, the no bid SIS system that he is railroading to particular company, and the ERP system that has no real in-district leader.

He has in his short term created pure choas, thanks again Dr. Harris.

Doesn't Harris have enough on-the-payroll subalterns to fill the current vacancy? That would be the fiscally responsible action to take.

Board President Carol Perkins said she's disappointed that Houpe's leaving but not concerned.

"Here's the thing: People come and go all the time," Perkins said. "That's within any system and any organization. There has to be a transition."

She's not concerned. This guy made 128k a year, and she's not concerned. He wasn't emptying wastebaskets.

If people "come and go"....OK....how about Harris?

The damage is done. It will take a ton of money to fix this mess. The network is fragile; school systems are broken; morale is nonexistent; personnel have been reassigned and scrambled. The Houpe experiment is a disaster.

This story hints at several levels of secrecy within the Columbus schools. Ms. Harris and all members of the Board of Education need, no, MUST remember that all of the Columbus schools' revenue comes from tax dollars, local, state, and federal.

We are not discussing personnel records in this story - we are talking about spending MAJOR amounts of money.

You would be surprised!!!! There are MANY highly paid employee’s who work for Columbus City Schools, but have no post secondary education. You would think being a school system that Columbus City Schools would value education. These people aren’t qualified and got a break because of who they know. This is why that entire district is a mess!!!!! Jump Mr. Houpe, God forbid you go down with the sinking ship!!!!!

All the tax payers can do is shake our heads.
We need more people like Kasich that has the guts to stand up to these people
Where is he going

Want to know why Houpe is not saying where is going? He is going to work the company that sold Columbus that thin client system! Right, they made millions of this failed project in Columbus now Houpe is going to reap his REWARDS!
Once again Dr. Harris way to go!

The Board has to take some ownership of this mess. All of these system purchases were presented: no real questions asked, no due diligence, no input from the employees who have to implement these IT disasters. Kronos is a debacle yet we don't learn from that experience? Who will want to take this job now? Please, Dr. Harris. Do NOT look to anyone inside the organization to promote. There is not a soul here who is up to the task.

"Perkins said she is confident that Superintendent Gene Harris can find a qualified replacement with so many people out of work."

Gene Harris, lol! I'm sure there will be a search firm hired to find the best candidate from a nationwide pool. However, ultimately she will discard the firm's candidates and give the job to a friend of hers along with a hefty raise.

"And only 15 % of employees will let them monitor their hours" ?? And I wonder why.
And you wonder why they are all voting against issue SB5.(THE OTHER 85 % WANTS NO ONE MONITORING THEIR HOURS )

Only these unions could support the poor inaccountability of their members. I expect that the union told the members not to track their time.

The fact is public employees at CBUS Public Schools have been spending this district into the red for years. Neopotism is common and hiring senior staff without credentials or degrees is just simply wrong.

Gene Harris should be fired for the terrible job she has done, yet the board gives her a raise.

Enough is enough from these entitled unions. Either work and track your time or quit. My suspicion is that by not tracking time you have people that come and go on their own. Kinda like Frankie Coleman did when Ted Strickland hired her at the State of Ohio.

Now there's a big bite in the school district that needs a cut , there is no way this person is worth $128,500 a year> this is why teachers are being lay off and all schools are going down because these school officials that think their er- replaceable are extremely over paid , this should be placed on the next agenda school board meeting > to cut these people pay they just set on their buts , on the phones , computers, and go to meetings ( and decide our children future education) and make cuts in every way they can , but never do they bring the subject up of their pay check being cut > now is that not right Ms. Harris ? That would stay a lot of educators from losing their jobs so you people can continue raising your income or stop it from being cut . And Ms. Harris, in no way are you worth what you get paid all you do is pressure the people under you to do your job and crack the whip if they do not succeed .

Another one bites the dust... I wonder if this guy is leaving to work with the very company that will be the provider of the new system... The kronos system was never complete.. It is not that the bargining employees aren't using it. It does not do what it was supposed to do... and the district has continued to spend good money after bad trying to convince the public that things are going as planned.. It's a broken record and it is starting to look more and more like ground hog day.

Houpe is a Slug that had no business in that position. Especially after the mess he created at the State (Dept. of Commerce). And then CCS turns around and hires him, knowing his "history"at the State of Ohio.

Whatever. Goodbye to Bad Rubbish. Too bad he isn't taking John Stanford with him. Another "Louse"
