Excavation of ancient Naples canal offers insight
Archaeologists believe that sometime between 1200 and 1400, Indians living in the Naples area constructed a canoe canal from the Gulf of Mexico to Naples Bay.

Facinating! I grew up at the SW corner of Ninth Ave S and Second St S in the '50's and heard the stories of the "pirate canal" from the Gulf to the bay. To know ancient Indians dug and used it for transportation is even cooler! Cattails grew in the lot behind our house and the area was so low we had 18" of the Gulf in our house when Donna's storm surge rolled in.

It's interesting to learn about the people who lived in SW Florida hundreds and thousands of years ago.
I've read that almost all of the native peoples in North and South America are linked genetically to two to three groups of people living in Siberia. It lends credence to the old theory that they migrated across the straits and islands between Siberia and Alaska to enter our lands.
