the first paragraph says it all. the demonstrations were all about land reforms and poverty. in 2011, Syria was going through a drought. when the poor started demonstrating, the West used this as a catalyst to overthrow Assad.
The West has been planning and training activists to use any opportunity to overthrow Assad for years. This was never about democracy as the West claims. Indeed, Zbignew Brezinski, the former national security adviser to Carter, wrote an article on this issue.
