The Midwest is filled with ghosts, the spirits of those who lived here centuries ago. Their presence can be felt at what remains of their ancient cities - some now official historic sites, others buried by time and bulldozers, likely lost forever.

Oh boy. OK I will start a furious debate!

There must be 100,000's of abandoned cities around the world, most sunk under rising seas or eroded back into the landscape leaving no traces. The "stone age" lasted maybe 100,000 years before our earliest written records began some 5,000 years ago.

What I wonder, what was different about the climate, or special location, back when those cities in the mid western plains were able to exist? Prior to the introduction of horse's, the Great Plains, except places along the great rivers, such as the Mandan towns in North Dakota, was a empty inhospital desert.

As most probably know, the Americans were the only people (in the world) to attempt to provide medical, educational and other help to the natives of North, South, and Central America.
Lewis & Clark brought Small Pox vaccine to innoculate all the native americans they encountered. Especially the Mandan. Our very first batch, sent to the indians before any Americans were innoculated. This was the first of many , as charities etc sent school teachers and medical help to the native americans. Unfortunatly small pox struck first, before living vaccine could arrive.
Late arriving immigrants, with ethnic prejudices and resentment at their lack of senority, disparge Americans prior to the arrival of their ancestors, and their children have re written many of the history texts to reflect their own prejudices. Some of you with only access to these texts will not be aware of this skipped over and misrepresented history, but all is in the archives easily found if you search.

There currently is a revolution in understanding native American/American history, led by native american "Young Turks" in Georgia of all places! Many texts are probably going to be re written,
and furious debates. Right now it appears that the Mound Builders of southeastern USA were Mayan colonies. Cherokees long warred on them, capturing their towns, farms, and enslaving the women to do the farmwork, killing the men as too dangerous to keep around, unless they could be sold.
