There is historical confusion about the various ethnic groups of indigenous peoples on this continent prior to the arrival of caucasians. Everybody written down in history books of the caucasians as being Maya were not. But the falsehood is still perpetuated. Cultures differed even though people may have lived in the same city state in Central America back there. So the story is like that of the USA. There are a bundle of ethnicities but the dominant culture is caucasian and should disaster strike us, history may tell the story of Latinos in the USA through a caucasian lens and end up with a pile of conflicting rubbish as has occurred for the Maya history and other ethnic groups around Central America. Resolution is just not fine enough to tease out the culture differences in the chunks of material recovered as being of historical import. So the Maya of today who know a meaningful amount of their history must note the conflicts and reject historical depictions such as Apocalypto.

I saw the movie and agree. I believe that he mixed stories of the Aztecs in with the supposed to be story of the Maya. The Spaniards didn't show up in 900. And I don't believe that the cities were dirty and chaotic. I was very upset that Anglo-Americans will just have another reason to reject immigrants coming from the South.

Are you kidding me? It's a movie! It is not going to create racist views against a civilization that no longer exists. This is sad. how could a movie cause the rejection of Central American immigrants? My God people, lighten up!

I saw the movie and was disappointed. I felt it was made for the teenage male rather than an adult audience. As for the "no one can out run their destiny", does it petain to a civilization or to Jaguar Paw, who is just trying to survive and save his family?
I felt the movie as with the "Passion of the Christ" made out to be much more than was actually delivered.
Please, someone define for me what is meant by Racist? Or, would a better descriptor be, bigotted or prejudicial!?
Wait for this film to come out on DVD.

mY UNDERSTANDING IS THAT RACIST IS BELIEVING THAT YOUR "RACE" OR GROUP IS SUPERIOR TO ANOTHER AND YOU HAVE THE MEANS OR THE POWER TO ENFORCE YOUR BELIEF.

kathy ur distorting the matter at hand. just by seeing the fact u comment on a blog like this tells me u have no idea what ur talking about. laura's right a movie like this must be talking in as entertainment not a some crazy plan to discriminate against a civilization that no longer exists...before u become so cirtical why dont u look at the message instead of watching it blindly

Apocolypto presents a fraction of Mayan culture. I hope that any rational adult would realize this. Apocolypto is about a human sacrafice that escapes. With that story line there isn't much room to portray the various aspects of mayan culture. It's a movie, not a documentary, there needs to be a hero and a villian. Unfortunatly the Mayan people, are the "villians" in this movie. Apocolypto is from the prespective of Jagwar paw, the main character, who is a peacefull hunter. The mayan come and burn his village, kill his friends and family, then take him away to be sacraficed. With this story line how is it possible to create a soft, kind picture of mayan culture? Jagwarpaw views the mayan as the enemy, Apocolypto is told through jagwar paw's point of view, therefore the viewer sees the mayan as the enemy. If this wasn't accomplished it would be a horrible movie.

I haven't seen the movie but I know for a fact these were both very advanced civilizations for their time, especially the Mayans. So, I would expect to see the many things that elevated them this position rather than some violent garbage that does not represent who these peoples really were.

I hope majority of people would see movies in general and do their own research, if they want to know more in depth.

The Mayan civalization does in fact exist, being seven million strong in Guatemala alone ~ Unfortunate that the prevailing view in the US & canada seems to be that Indigenous = savage (lack of values and morals) and that people that self-identify themselves as Indigenous are stuck in the past or backward, redeemable only by modernization and a strong dose of christianity - as our savior Mel comes from a country that exemplifies this with their horrific treatment of Aboriginal Australians, its no big surprise that his current crusade promotes the proliferation of these views -

I just saw the movie and felt disturbed. What where his resources? Where they Mayan actors? How could he get away with such a false view of indigenous people. Here again in the movie as in life here comes the white man in his cloak and cross to save the savages!!! ugghhh! I am so upset at such ignorance and racism.

What is wrong with you . Do you hold every other director up to these standards. Are movies not for entertainment? If you want history, READ a history book.Wait let me guess you are the same people that want to ban scary fairy tailes in elementry school. GO SEE A PHYCOLOGIST.I thought the movie was visually stunning action packed entertaining, brought out emotion and pleasently different from all the other hollywood movies.By the way my ancestors are vikings and even though I have seen movies dipicting them as savages I am not so neurotic that I think that has any bearing on my behavior whatsoever not to mention what other people think of me personally. get a life or shoulD I say some self esteem.

I loved the movie. Because of the great posts above, I will research Aztec, and Mayan culture once again. I had done a report a long long time ago in 2nd and 6th grades on both civilizations. I love them both regardless of how the movie portrayed them both to us the audience. All I know is I'm thankful for the calendar! Thank God It's Friday! Or according to the Aztecs and Mayans: "Thank the GODS it's Friday!"
Peace,
Anne

Thanks. You sound sane. It's a movie. Period, the end. If you want to watch something factually correct in every way, I guess you won't be able to watch anything, including our news.

hix wrote: ... horrific treatment of Aboriginal Australians, its no big surprise that his current crusade promotes the proliferation of these views - lol. The only atrocities performed against the Australian Aboriginals in this day and age, are by the Australian aboriginals. Trying to get them to do anything other than drink all day (with a number of notable exceptions) is the ongoing battle of many Aboriginal people as well as white people. I have talk to many Aboriginals in strong political positions and they are trying desperately to prevent their race from being extinguished by alcohol abuse. Sure Australia was taken over almost 220 years ago, and there were some atrocities performed in the process, but every single piece of land on the planet can lay claim to that.

Jeeze people, it's a movie. If you need historical accuracy then stick to the History Channel and stay away from the Ciniplex 6, 12, 24, 48 or whatever.
Yes, I saw the movie, I wasn't real impressed but to call it racist is akin to calling Psycho Prejudiced and insensitive toward mental illness.
Get a grip people it's entertainment not world commentary.

Well Gibson himself has been going around saying that it is world commentary and this is an archaeology site not a movie critique site.

LOL, That's what I'm saying Kathy! This is an archaeology comment page and every single post in this thread is a movie critique. So get off my case unless you want to cite every post here, including yours, as being off topic.
And....BTW having a world class archaeologist critique a movie is just about as idiotic as having a world class Hollywood director critique the work being done at an archaeological site.
