"There aren't many places in today's world where you can go out to hunt," he said. "You've got laws for everything." Whoa, sailor. Isn't this a nation of laws? Isn't this what keeps armed lunatics out of shopping malls, workplaces and schools? Isn't this why white collar criminals are punished so harshly when they bring the country to its knees through arcane manipulation of financial markets? So if there are laws that keep hayseeds like you from randomly destroying archaeological sites for no better reason than others collect baseball cards, well, tough. In archaeology, context is as important, if not more so, as artifact. What sort of context is the glass-topped display case except proof that the owner is a selfish, stupid, mealy-mouthed grit redneck with no more sense than a balky mule. But of course he's part of a larger culture of boneheads and the newspaper reporter is one of them. Topix Archaeology should have a "Hall of Fame" site, but named something like "Hall of Douchebags" that feature articles like this one. "10,000 artifacts"? They're oughta be a law.
