free advertising for his restaurants. He's not feeling to much personal pain.

Chef Gene Moana of Willy's Smokehouse is lucky. He only pays $4 for his gallon of gas. We pay £1.20 a liter here in the U.K.--- enjoy the maths, guys! Cheers, Frank.

...it might be free advertising, but with most of us (including Chef Moana) paying $$ for gas and a longer way to drive (with out the transit options that are in the UK and elsewhere) I really don't think that adds up to much in increased business.
Geesh, nice that the only comments can be negative, eh? I would rather support local restaurants, but if I go to the peninsula I will support good eateries, whether or not they are in the paper. It was a decent little article.

His restaurants are wonderful. Excellent quality food and service.

Tony is so very nice, too.It is nice to have the option to try a daily special at his restaurants. Not as many nice choices in the mid peninsula near San Mateo as there are in Monterey.

When I lived in Monterey I was a regular customer at his restaurants. How I miss the quality of them up here. I still go there to get good service and fine restaurants in Monterey.

Try finding a quality well done restaurant with the fine cuisine in Salinas. There are none. Its like apples and oranges....
The article was well done and as far as I am concerned, "Nobody does it Better" ..... and the price for a daily special is awesome. He is good to offer that to the public. His places are expensive.
His New York steak at the Rio Grill is superb ! Great Wines too. Wonderful bar area in his establishments, with atmosphere.

...that's fascinating Dana. Perhaps instead of letting the INS know about this you can just post it and let the whole world know-since folks from just about anywhere can read this...and if you work for him and kiss his ...hmmm parts....then if you are so bitter and negative, find another job and report him. I am not sure that I believe your post, however lots of immigrants are willing to work for much lower wages and I am sure that is galling. (and just for the record, us folks in Salinas don't support illegal immigration From Any Country. If our relations had to do it the hard way, everyone else should. Period. No excuses.)

Part of the realignment of our society after the bubble burst is freedom from subtle marketing manipulation. Families may find they can have a "nice dinner" at home with dad, mom and the kids all working together to create, share and clean up. I realize the subplot of the article for Tony is a "nice dinner" is at his rstaurant, preferably ordering wine at 100% plus markup.

Perhaps Tony might be able to realign his family values--maybe one restaurant instead of four--more time at home to prepare a meal with your family.

Isn't the point here for people to discuss what changes they are making as a result of the economy and fuel prices? How about some constructive comments that might help others adapt in some tough economic conditions?

...you are correct Ellery. Just making a point to DANA that negative posts usually have negative connotations.( and Yeah, we try to make sure that anyone working in our business is legal, as well as supporting those who do...and in this valley it is not easy. Calling and writing lawmakers to make our voice heard-well, I do that, for what it is worth. Working in the fields is something we did as kids-they would laugh at us now, that is for sure. For the record, I grow much of what we eat and support local growers. As far as not eating out, we don't generally-and that includes most fast food restaurants. And of course, I have worked in that industry as well, so I am well aware of the issues facing all these industries relying on cheap labor. And No, illegal immigration is NOT the answer. Legal immigration including a worker program is the answer.)
GETTING BACK TO THE ECONOMY (or the article at hand). Here are some helpful ideas, besides staying at home and not eating out.:)
Growing one's own veggies is one way to cut back on costs (container gardens work for those in small spaces).
Another is to drive only when one has to (walking/riding a bike might take longer, but is good for one and will use only one's time).
To combine errands, or save up errands when going in a particular direction or to a particular town.
To choose wisely when buying a car or anything else and to think about it-several days at least. Differentiate between a want and a need.
To use reusable containers instead of disposable.
To utilize Craig's List and Freecycle to get items before buying them (and to give useful items to someone who needs them).
I hope that is helpful to anyone who sees them and I wish you luck Dana in finding a new path. Chow.

Dana

Some of us civilized people enjoy dining out in a nice restaurant once in a while, being served lovely meals, in a great ambiance. And we do enjoy our home cooked wonderful meals.

You seem to like trashing Tony and his staff,(you also said you work for him)... What you alledge about his allededly illegal immigrants, is downright mean and mean spirited.

I would not want you in my establishment working for me and alledging comments like that to the public. You don't deserve to work in his Fine Establishment !

Hi All,
This is the real Dana Neikirk. I was just informed of this website and am surprised to see my name attached to the posts submitted. I can assure everyone in this forum all comments are false. Some cowardly person is using my name and posting rediculous comments. I will be calling this Website in the morning to have all comments stricken. Please be careful and don't believe everything you read. Note: I appreciate all of the postive comments Gem & Hey have written in Tony's defense, I agree.

Wow! I'm floored! I just want to make sure you all know that was NOT my husband. I'm almost speechless that someone would right such horrible things and attach my husband's name to it. I hope whomever is this vindictive can let go of all the negativity and anger and get on with their own life.

This is a very mean and vengeful person, probably a co worker., who wants to hurt your husband in that restaurant. its all in writing and the person who wrote it saying they are Dana, will be known through the paper. Filing a lawsuit would be advisable. It is all on paper. Slander, and trying to harm Dana with his employer. Shame that human beings are so vindictive and cruel.

Maybe if restaurants like this would appeal to locals during a dip in the economy, business would improve. I live about four blocks from Willies, but I never go because it's a tourist joint with inflated tourist prices. I'm all for local business, but they could cut a break for us locals to make us happy and encourage repeat business. Not many of us who live in Monterey can afford tourist prices more than every once in a while, so I often spend my hard earned cash in Seaside or North Fremont in Monterey.

Tonys restaurants: The article did say all his restaurants now have a daily special., making it affordable for some of us to go there reasonably.
