This boom and bust cycle is pretty hard on the small mac-nut growers. Mac-oil right from the nut burns clean in a diesel , which doesn't care what quality taste is there. An alternate market would help macfarmers keep farming instead of giving up and subdividing.

My brother worked for Aloha Airlines back in the60's and 70's. They shipped on thousands of Macadamia nut cuttings to Australia and Africa. "There goes Hawaii's industry," he remembers thinking. Australia is on an all-out push to "reclaim it's native nut."
Macadamia and Kukui could make clean bio diesel. But with Hawaii's cost to produce anything, would probably make it too costly to sell. Good if everybody could process their own. I really don't know how the Mac nut folks are surviving. Probably better to cut down those trees and plant coffee. |
