Coyote Killing Contest Sparks Outrage in New Mexico

Full story: ABC News

A gun store-sponsored competition in which hunters shoot and kill as many coyotes as they can has sparked outrage among activists in New Mexico who have called it a "heinous killing contest." Animal Protection of New Mexico posted a petition on its website, rallying against the contest, which is sponsored by Gunhawk Firearms of Los Lunas.

it is investigative reporting.

By the way, in NM out-of-state big boxes work a tax break that gives them an additional gross receipts tax advantage over locally-based businesses.

I do agree that the big stores like wal mart do put mom & pop buisnesses out of buisness. There is another side. In the town where I grew up before wal mart all the little mom & pop stores never paid there help good wages. Many of the stores paid less than the minium wage and paid cash off the books. Those little mom & pop stores overcharged for many items. they didnt have a liberal return policy. They made there sales because they gave credit. the paying customers had to pay more to pay for the few credit customers who didnt pay. What happened when Wal Mart came the cash customers all went and spent their cash at wal mart got the same product at less than 1/2 of what it sold for locally. I bought my oil & filters at the auto parts store (they had a 90% credit customer base) I always paid cash. I was paying the parts store a $1 for a quart of oil plus tax. When walmart came I bought the very same quart of oil for 37 cents plus tax. Today I dont buy hardly anything at the parts store or wal mart. Now I purchase my parts and oil online. I buy my oil in a 55 gallon drum. I buy my filters a dozen at a time. And I can get it much cheaper and there isnt the local sales tax on online purchases and I usually get free shipping. I believe online shopping will eventually close many buisnesses even wal mart will be affected by online sales. Just reciently I bought a dozen coyote traps for a little less than $16 each online and no sales tax. the shipping was less than sales tax would have been. My feed store carries the very same trap for $23 each plus tax. Its just the way things change. There are many cattle men who sell there calf crop online. They come to the farm take a video and the video is played and the cattle auctioned online. there isnt any sale barn & commission paid to a sale barn or wages to sale barn employees. the purchaser sends a truck to the farm ad picks up the calves and away to the feedlot they go.
Lets go

Dude, I go to Bass Pro, but usually I go right home afterwards. I hardly support the other small businesses by going there, unless I happen to eat out in the area too, which is rare.
I can tell you this, when the Meijers, Target and Walmart moved in, most of the local small business shops went under. Even the Kmart died. The local grocery store couldn't compete with the giant. A small family business that thrived for so long in this area...done within the year.
"How much tax revenue can the local government expect from the store?"
Who cares? I'm not about "funding government."
In fact, my community and other surrounding communities just said NO to police protection!
Where did I state it was a tourist destination? You added that part. Our tourists impact nearly every business. Many of them spend the entire winter here.

When I travel to Atlanta usually I will stop at Bass Pro. Iíll normally spend several hundred dollars and Gwinnett County gains the sales tax. Walk the parking lot and youíll notice vehicles from many states.

Funding local government provides services beyond police. Funding is also used for local roads, schools and a variety of other services.

Maybe because it's NOT the Albuquerque forum. It's the Guns forum.

Thank you posting this. It's something to think of. The other drawback is when big corporations move in and weed out competition from the little guy, the shopper is beholden to whatever prices they want to charge us.
Absolutely correct. We should have a Business Size Czar and make sure that no company gets too big. Look at the benefits of breaking up Ma Bell. Good thinking. Protectionism is our byword. Tax those large companies more and they will shrink.

You seem to think people have the skills necessary for our country to compete on a global scale based on and education system designed in the day of farming and manufacturing .
I don't give a crap about competing on a "global" scale. This is America and all we need to worry about is America. Screw everyone else. Any skills people want to acquire, they are free to acquire, AT THEIR OWN EXPENSE.

Your entire post spoke of redistribution. What does "government funding" mean to you? To me it means I pay for someone else's education. After all, government doesn't get any money except that which it takes from the citizens.

I imagine you are happy with ignorant kids and a country that can't compete with an outdated education system that leads to poverty and crime which creates bigger expenses then funding education so you can call yourself "tough on crime".
How did you come up with this crap? Poverty doesn't create crime. Bad parenting and being raised with no moral values leads to crime. Plenty of poor people are not criminals. You are making excuses for people who have no excuse! My Grandma had an eighth grade education, yet never broke into anyones home!

GET REAL !
Why are you telling me to Get real? Where did I say anything about housing criminals and paying their way? And why should it cost $40,000 a year? I could house them in tents and feed them Alpo and do it for $1200 a year.

What you are saying here is that if someone isn't given free college, then they have an excuse to turn to crime. BULLSHIT! People can make a damn good living without college. One can learn a skill just by reading a few books and teaching themselves how to do something people are willing to pay for.

Your lost on a planet without an orbit.

We have massive unemployment and a hugh problem with balance of trade.

We have to compete on a global scale , that is the reality of todays world.

No one will be worse of with an education but ignorance is a cost to society and self.

We do not have the jobs to support the population so just having a skill does not mean one can support one's self.
