Don't get me wrong; I fully believe in evolution, but is it just me, or isn't it a bit assumptive and an exaggeration to triumph this as /proof/ of evolution, and as the link to our human evolution?

Well, this was among the least hyped accounts of this discovery. I think you're right in being skeptical in the notion that this is the base of the human tree but it's important, not just because it's a transitional fossil but because
(1) Biology predicted it should exist if it could exist at all (fossils being tricky business) (2) Geology told us where we would be most likely to find it (3) Paleontology found it. So more than just biology, it shows the scientific method works (again). |
