Mitt Romney's bizarre 'Rising Oceans' laugh line at GOP convention speech

Aug 31, 2012 Full story: Examiner.com 325

There was a certain amount of "theater of the bizarre" during the Republican National Convention last night, but it wasn't just an iconic 82-year-old actor ad-libbing a rambling talk to an empty chair - it was Mitt Romney using global warming and the documented reality of rising sea levels as a laugh line to mock President Obama and tickle the GOP ... You guess it right for what you do, Mr Cliche.

I simply summarized what happened. I also remember, as soon as Obama was selected, deniers came out to blame him for all the ills and wanted his failing via resistance.

America remembers!

When Romneyhood(reverse Robinhood) steals from the poor & gives to the rich, he will keep his methods secret..... so he can continue, taking from the poor & giving to the rich.

We don't have any money. Obama took it all. Each one of us already owes $130,000 and the number just keeps going up and up.

If Obama had taken it allegedly, then he would not need more.

Why then bring in a hungry wolf and his hundreds of relatives at this time? You know, there's nothing like a hungry large pack.

“President Obama promised to begin to slow the rise of the oceans and heal the planet.[Pause. Laughter.] MY promise … is to help you and your family,” Romney said.

Maybe Sandy is trying to tell you something, Mitt?

Maybe the mitt can use his etch a sketch and remove the mess sandy left behind. Hay did anyone see big bird? Another way perhaps the mitt tried to remove big bird off the air wave.

1914 was the quietest year.

Basically, all presidents had at least one hurricane during their "reign," as Mr Undoubtably Spelt Fourty would say.

New York subway flooded for first time in 108 years.

7 inches of sea level rise in the last century.

Join the dots.

Science predicts at least three times that sea level rise by the end of the century.

Is wanting to slow that level of sea level rise really a joke?

Is that what Sandy is saying?

So did it flood before that 108th year? 7 inches of sea level in the last century what about the century before. Science predicts a cure for the common cold and were still waiting. Hay Sandy can't talk it's show and tell.

New York has escaped most storms because they curve out to sea normally, weaken a lot in colder water and if they do land, they cannot make enough sea level rise to do much damage by flooding. At least, in the past.

AGW is now an 'accessory before the fact', with two effects. One is to fuel the storm even in colder northern waters (running up the gulf stream in this case). Now admittedly, Sandy was a unique storm with a pressure in the eye that would have created a class 3 to class 5 hurricane in the gulf. So that is not really all that much of a deal.

But the other effect is to create a stationary loop of cold arctic air that diverted Sandy from the normal Westerly movement and caused it to make land as a strong tropical storm or weak class 1 hurricane. And slowed the movement so that the storm surge had time to build.

As to the 7" of sea level rise, it may have played a part. The differnce in damage from 3 meters to 4 meters is MASSIVE. Damage is a 'threshold effect' and a SMALL increase in the peak can move the needle on costs enormously.

Sandy is still 'weather' but it is also an indicator of how much more frequent damaging weather events are getting as the climate changes from AGW.
