Aliens may not contradict Catholicism, but it certainly contradicts the belief that God created us in his image. Unless they are trying to say that all intelligent aliens would look just like humans.

WoW! So maybe now we can start using discarded cells in order to further cancer and other medical research. Of course the bible is not a science. It it were then we could say with certainty whether God was real or that faith is strong and helps us along. It is easier to believe in something you can't see than to deal with the science of certainty. Don't get me wrong, I believe in a creator and I have faith in god. However, I am certain that God wants nothing more than for me to live life in a way that will not hurt others and respect everyone regardless of their race, religion, ethnicity, gender, abilities or differences. We are should just try to make the most of our lives in this planet.

Did Rev. Funes say life may have developed elsewhere? Huh, that's a funny choice of words for creationists.

Joel wrote: Aliens: It's NOT OK to believe in the Vatican. Big LOL!! Just don't turn your back aliens!! That is a big step for religion - to actually say that something else might exist besides earth. Like I always say .. you are going to have to open your mind somewhere down the line. You cannot keep a closed mind forever and keep saying you are an intelligent animinal!!!

THIS is what they do with the money you give them when you go to church? How many church officials flew back and forth how many times to and from how many cities to come to this life changing doctrine?? I wonder how much money was spent coming to this conclusion and releasing it to the great unwashed public. And really... If you believe in aliens, would you just stop if the vatican said it wasn't ok? Or foe those who don't, are you going to start?

Sir Digby Chicken Caesar wrote: You'd just better not believe in evolution! actually, the Catholic Church doesn't teach creationism or "intelligent design" in its schools (at least mine didn't). We learned about evolution the same way public schoolers [outside of the bible belt] do.

They must think this gives them first dibs on their little alien money if/when we make contact.

Jane wrote: They must think this gives them first dibs on their little alien money if/when we make contact. Yeah, because the church is all about making money ... that sentiment is so idiotic that it's hard for me to respond to. Whenever the Catholic Church is mentioned in a Trib article, this forum attracts the anti-Catholic bigots like flies on poop. So, I'll just say this: the Catholic Church is the most charitable institution in the world. Accordingly, they may take in money, but they give more time and money away than anyone else. Your criticism of the Church is based purely on ignorance (as the statements suggesting that the Church condemns evolution, which it does not, illustrate)-- just like every other prejudice.

I give the Church much credit to being open minded on the subject. How can there not be life beyond this planet?

I've never figured out why finding ET or some germ somewhere on Mars should put our religious beliefs in question. The first verse in the Bible says "In the beginning God created the heavens AND the Earth". That means ET and US. Fine, ET has cooler, flashier hod rods than we do down here, but that doesnt mean he/she/it/they weren't created beings too.

Next logical question
|
Now that the initial wave of silly "venting" is over in these comments, the next logical question seems to be the following.
How would intelligent life elsewhere in the universe relate to Jesus? If God created the universe, and sent his son to Earth to show humans the path to Him, how do the teachings of Jesus relate to intelligent beings that God has used the process of evolution to create elsewhere in His universe?
People who want to make silly jokes or who prefer to disrespect the religious view of others may want to dismiss these questions. But to those who take these issues seriously, the Vatican has opened up very important avenues for discussion.
