Biodiesel is problem, not solution

In October 2007, Jean Ziegler, the U.N. special rapporteur on the right to food described the conversion of crops into biofuel as a "crime against humanity." The next month, November 2007, The Eagle published ...

Most of what we eat now isnt really food anyway.

The food crisis being blamed on the biodiesel push is false. The government farm subsidizes farms not to produce anything so prices will be profitable for the farmers. Those being subsidized should be allowed to produce for biofuels and that should not upset anything.

Are you in the US? The United States government does NOT subsidize farms to not produce. The last farm bill to include this provision ended in 1991.

I think we're looking at things the wrong way, we should be looking at our waste stream and seeing the potential energy there.

I make BioDiesel from waste oil from restaurants. The idea of using food for fuel is crazy. How much oil is in all the plastic that is tossed away each day?

Has the idea of algae farming for oil now become a viable alternative?
These are the questions for our future.

You are a wise man,and people need to listen to people just like you!
Plastic makes up a huge portion of the waste stream, and is a petroleum product,so why isn't it being re utilized to its full potential?

Has anyone calculated the effect of high oil prices on food? Why blame bio-fuels, which are a very small percentage of the world grain stock. What about the $500 billion spent on a war over oil - maybe that could be used to lower food prices?

Why blame pioneers that wish to shift the ownership of energy from oil barrons to farmers, and fuel income from dictatorships to domestic businesses?

This short term food grain price escalation looks like market manipulation - a researcher at the U. of Illinois Champaign recently published this fact. Look deeper, and reject superficial assumptions.

What about stopping production and sales of weapons so that 3rd country farmers can produce their own food and energy localy? Utilising the suns energy storage in grains is OK depending what you are using it for. According data there is enough land for feeding 24 billion people. Stop shooting each other and go do something usefull.
