plane and simple.
People in the USA do NOT eat horse meat. That is why WE don't want to pay the USDA to inspect horse meat for the RICH to eat it overseas.

So? and your point is?

So they die to be eaten, so do cows, pigs, goats, sheep, chickens, turkeys, rabbits, guinea pigs, deer, elk ... shall I go on?

<quoted text>Ann, get smart. Co-sponsoring a bill to end horse slaughter IS compassionate.
I was not referring to McCain's sponsorship - which obviously demonstrates compassion. That comment was in reference to Chris Healy and his compassion deficiency!

I applaud Rosa De Lauro in her efforts to ban horse slaughter, it is the most inhumane treatment of our horses I have ever witnessed. We should all be up in arms about this, is this what America symbolizes?
Ever person who stands up to protect the horses is put down and critized, and I will never understand why, especially when Rosa speaks for the 70% percent of Americans polled who want our horses to be safe and not murdered ALIVE to please some rich foreigner. Let them get their own horses. Fact is most cannot touch there horses until they are 7 years old and they take our horses, many still babies, because the meat is prime meat, not old and diseased. People need to use some common sense when they think only the old and sick go to slaughter, many are racehorses right off the track, pumped up with drugs that will take months to get out of their systems.
I think they are all addicted to horsemeat, some eat it raw.
They must get their highs off of the chemicals in the meat.
And if you question that, read the article about the guy who lost his place in the olympics because he tested positive to steroids. Hmmm passed the lie detector test, must have been the horsemeat he ate!

Stop slamming De Lauro, she is only doing what the mass majority of American's want.

I have been a registered Republican for years, but I was disgusted when I read Chris Healy's remarks about Rosa DeLauro's efforts to save our horses from Slaughter. Shame on you Chris Healy! How often do you eat dog or cat? Our horses are faithful and loyal servants; deserving of much better than the terror and agony of the slaughter house. I suggest Chris Healy investigates what does happen to these animals( who cannot speak for themselves) and support the effort to save them.

I guess some people don't read the Bible, it state; you do not eat a animal unless it has as a split hoof.

Horses do not have a split hoof.

Roas Delauro, I thank you for your support for the horses.

Dont you know the state of our economy is in one big mess? Health care here for people that cannot afford it has been ongoing for many years! Every election for president the american people hear the same o same o on coverage for all but nothing ever gets done!!

Dont you know horsemeat is unfit for human consumption? Horses are given many drugs that are banned in our own meat animals, these banned drugs stay in their system indefinately!Shame on our USDA to claim it is fit to eat! Many are shipped right away out of the low end auctions that are rampent with disease and lame horses. You see, there is nothing humane about horse slaughter.See www.kaufmanzoning.net for the true facts of this awful trade!!
Pet food companys have not used it for many years!

Many Americans are applauding Rosa De Lauro for standing up for the Americans that said enough is enough for the inhumane slaughter of our american horses!

I'm sorry but if you loved your horse and it gave you many years of riding fun why would you sell it at auction.Everyone knows what goes on . I would humanely have a vet put the animal down if need be. The problem is that disposing of the remains. Cremation is a cost factor, but in my mind it would be worth it to put my beloved horse to rest. My animals become a memeber of the family and are treated as such.

I support Rep DeLauro, she has the common sense to know that horses are being bred for slaughter, over breeding is suppling Europe with horse meat. AMERICANS DON'T EAT HORSE MEAT, THEY ARE A DEMESTICATED COMPANION PET....ANIMAL ABUSE. HORSES ARE NOT COWS. THIS IS BEING DONE BECAUSE THERE IS BIG MONEY IN SLAUGHTERING AMERICA'S ICON. SAVE THE HORSES.

Chris Healy is completely out of touch with reality. The claim that Connecticut taxpayers 'can only afford to eat horse meat' shows just how ignorant Healy is. Horsemeat is not consumed in the US. It is consumed by wealthy foreigners.

If Healy had any concern for the health of humans he would consider the fact that horsemeat is contaminated. Horses are routinely given bute, steroids, dewormers and myriad other substances that are clearly labeled,'NOT FOR USE IN FOOD ANIMALS'. Bute is a known carcinogen when consumed by humans.

The ongoing lies told by the GOP have made me ashamed to have ever voted Republican.

"The greatness of a nation and its moral progress can be judged by the way its animals are treated." Mohandas Gandhi

Doesn't that say it all?

Do we want our leaders to be greedy, soul-less politicians, or do we want a representative who can empathize with other beings; human and animal alike?

Studies have shown that those who abuse animals will eventually or do abuse humans. Horse slaughter is animal abuse; this is a fact.

You decide.

<<One can only wonder why she is more concerned with horse slaughtering than protecting the health of Connecticut taxpayers who can only afford to eat horse meat," Healy complained.>>
I could not believe this statement! Horse-meat is not eaten in Connecticut or anywhere in the United States. It sells for $17 -$20 per lb. overseas. It is a very expensive meat in Europe and Asia. In this country horses are companion animals, partners in sports, agriculture and therapy. Rep. De Lauro is to be commended for her bravery and compassion in trying to close the transport and slaughter of our horses to foreign slaughterhouses. The Belgium owned slaughterhouses earned $12 million in 2006 and paid only $5 in taxes. I had to pay much, much more in taxes. Time to end this travesty, support HR 503 and S.311.
