Stellar evolution & classical mass loss of single stars also results in the loss of the outer H & occasionally also He burning shells. leaving a convective core buring C & other elements in a core/shell structure.
The result would even in single stars produce a 1a yellow supergiant similar to epsilon Aurigae or gamma cygni.
The explosion of a yellow superiant as a supernova is therefore expected. Whether such a star explodes as a red supergiant depends upon whether the outer H or He burning shells are on or off @ the time. See Rho Cassiopeiae for example.
