This one answers more than one question.
It also explains why large spirals such as our own are still accreting gas and forming stars in the outer parts of the disc.
It appears that the low density gas in the Cosmic web is accretable and is not able to ram strip a relatively large spiral of at least magellanic cloud size.
This also now raises a question of some considerable importance... Elliptical galaxies formed from the collision & merger of 2 spirals are initially ram stripped from within by the initial starburst. They must therefore have from that point only a limited amount of time before they cool & fade enough to accrete gas from the cosmic stream and turn back into an Sa spiral.
So. the question is, how long can an isolated elliptical such as Maffei 1 remain as an elliptical?
